Your Old Droog's 2019 Albums It Wasn’t Even Close and Transportation (and vinyl 2LP)

Back in 2017 Your Old Droog dropped both the solo album Packs and the collaborative EP project EP What Happened To Fire? with buddy / fellow NYC emcee talent Wiki. But then last year, with the exception of a handful of solo and collaborative tracks sprinkled throughout 2018, the Nas-inflected rapper gave the hip-hop world (hungry for more) no albums. However following two full years with no album releases from Your Old Droog (aka YOD), the super talented emcee returns in force with not just one, but two new 2019 album releases both of which arrive into Amoeba this month.

1: Oddisee The Iceberg (MMG/Fat Beats) (2017)

Each year in the second half of March, with Record Store Day just weeks away, record labels traditionally have kicked into full gear with a non-stop flow of releases coming out. And this year is no exception with some incredible hip-hop being released by big and small labels on both vinyl and CD and increasingly more on cassette too. Check out the recent Amoeblog on boutique label Get On Down's exclusive Record Store Day (April 22nd 2017) releases that includes an informative interview with Papa D who is one of the partners of the label that's an imprint of Traffic Entertainment. Peep and/or download as PDF the full list of Record Store Day 2017 releases (hip-hop and beyond) here. Meantime new releases to arrive into Amoeba this week include Washington DC super-talent Oddisee' latest full-length release The Iceberg.  Again from Mello Music Group (MMG), who just last year released both Oddisee' Alwasta EP his The Odd Tape album, this latest is a dual release with Fat Beats under their MMG/Fat Beats combo which we can assume means that there is a vinyl version coming soon. Clocking in at just under 48 minutes The Iceberg's 14 tracks include the song "NNGE" that features album guest Toine. See the new accompanying music video below.

Among the new releases / arrivals into Amoeba this week include the latest from Wyclef Jean who we have not heard from, in terms of an all new recording, in seven years. But this week, care of Entertainment One, the Fugees star released J'Ouvert. The new ten song album includes such tracks as the lead single (video below) "Hendrix," "The Ring," "Lady Haiti," and "If I Was President 2016" which is a kind of sequel to his last release: 2010's autobiographical political hip-hop EP If I Were President: My Haitian Experience. You may recall how back in that same year the Haitian born, NJ raised artist had announced that he would be running for president of Haiti but soonafter was disqualified because he had not been a  permanent resident of his homeland country for the previous five years.

Hip Hop Rap Up: Action Bronson, Death Grips, J-Live, Your Old Droog, Greg Grease + more

Amoeba Music Berkeley Top Five Hip-Hop Chart April 09, 2015

1) Death Grips The Powers That B (Third Worlds) also avail in vinyl

2) Action Bronson Mr. Wonderful (Atlantic)

3) Greg Grease Born to Lurk x Forced to Work (Sound Verite)

4) Your Old Droog Your Old Droog (Your Old Droog)

5) J-Live His Own Self (Mortier)

The new Amoeba hip-hop chart number one album is The Powers That B by one of a kind NorCal group Death Grips.  The new double album (avail in both CD and vinyl formats) is the group's fourth studio album and is essentially a two-in-one LP release since it includes both the previously released June 2014 free digital download full-length Niggas on the Moon, plus the second half of the 2 album set been Jenny Death - aka Disc 2.  Now some protest that Death Grips do not qualify as "hip-hop."  E-Lit, who supplied the above current Berkeley hip-hop chart, does not. And neither do I. My feeling is that this totally unique Sacramento trio do not fall under any already established genre or sub-genre of any music and that hip-hop is as good a descriptive starting point as any other to label the band with or, as Amoeba.com accurately labels the group's aggressive sound and crediting them with, "basically created their own genre of aggressive electro noise, Zach Hill’s wildman drumming and MC Ride’s berserk raps."
