A Brief History of Colored Vinyl

A lot of folks are saying colored vinyl is back and they're right. From the smoke-colored indie exclusive version of the Stranger Things soundtrack to the latest round of Black Sabbath re-issues in red, blue, green, orange, purple, white, and combinations thereof, colored vinyl is adding collectible and aesthetic value to new releases and re-issues alike these days. But if it's making a comeback, where did it come from in the first place? What was the first slab of colored wax? Was it some far-out blotter-inspired psychedelia from the late '60s, an organ-fueled exotica LP from the '50's, a Disney 78 from the '40s? The actual answer may surprise you.

Three Essential Melvins LPs To Be Reissued June 24

Melvins Vinyl Reissues

When the Melvins burst onto the Washington music scene in the early '80s, they were making music heavier, slower, and sludgier than anyone else had before. The impact made by key members Buzz Osborne and Dale Crover cannot be understated; Melvins' uncompromising sound influenced many of the now legendary Seattle grunge bands (Nirvana were huge fans and supporters) and much of the existing canon of stoner rock/sludge/doom bands, including Boris, Sunn O))), and Earth. In fact, after a string of indie releases, it's in large part due to interest in the Seattle scene that Melvins was picked up by major label Atlantic Records in 1993 -- a partnership that would lead to the release of three of the band's classic albums, Houdini, Stag and Stoner Witch. Oddly, considering their importance, all three LPs have been out of print on vinyl for over two decades.

But no more! Jack White's Third Man Records is reissuing each album on 180-gram vinyl with gatefold sleeves. Pre-orders are available now from us (and they'll ship FREE to the U.S.), with the LPs set for a June 24 release. Here's what to look out for on each album.

Watch Neil Young Record Straight onto Vinyl on 'Fallon'; Third Man Record Player and New Neil Young Album Out Now

Perhaps the coolest thing on TV this week was on Monday, when Neil Young showed up on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon with Jack White to record live in White’s refurbished Voice-O-Graph booth, which records straight to vinyl. You can see the pair showing this thing off in the clip below while Louis C.K. watches on, joking about recording laughter-free comedy in it.

Neil Young recorded his entire new album, the covers record A Letter Home, live in the 1947 Voice-O-Graph booth, coming out with a record that pops and hisses with old-school flair. Jack White says it's the only vinyl-recording booth left in the world that’s open to the public, as the booths were typically found in arcades and at tourist attractions from about the 1940s through the ’70s.Visitors to Third Man Records in Nashville can record live in the booth and mail their record out, as seen in this video.
