New "What's In My Bag?" Episode with Shepard Fairey

Shepard Fairey - What's In My Bag?

Acclaimed street artist, graphic designer, and social activist Shepard Fairey (Obey Giant) did some shopping recently at Amoeba Hollywood and sat down with us for a What's In My Bag? episode! He shared some of his favorite records and album covers, and talked about how The Clash's London Calling is the embodiment of punk, the way graphic design serves as a visual parallel to what's happening in the music, and the pleasurable inconvenience of vinyl.

Shepard Fairey is the American street artist, activist, and graphic designer behind the iconic Obey Giant and Obama "HOPE" designs. He first became active in the early '80s, sharing his artwork on t-shirts and skateboards while still a teenager. While attending the Rhode Island School of Design in 1989, Fairey created his first instantly recognizable work: the André the Giant Has a Posse sticker campaign, which later evolved into the Obey Giant. After graduating from RISD, Fairey opened Alternate Graphics, a small printhouse that produced his t-shirt and sticker designs. In the late '90s, Fairey opened guerilla marketing firm BLK/MRKT Inc.; during this time, he designed Mozilla's red dinosaur logo. Fairey launched the OBEY Clothing company in 2001 as a way to bring activism to everyday design. He and his wife Amanda Fairey founded the Studio Number One design agency in 2003. Highlights of their work include the poster for the film Walk the Line, plus album covers for The Smashing Pumpkins (Zeigeist), Led Zeppelin (Mothership), and Flogging Molly (Whiskey on a Sunday).

Marlon Williams Amoeba Green Room Sessions

New Zealand singer/songwriter Marlon Williams swung by Amoeba Hollywood recently for cool Green Room Session with his backing band The Yarra Benders, comprised of Gus Agars, Dave Khan, and Ben Woolley. The set starts with the darkly romantic "Vampire Again," a jangly, indie croon that builds to a shoegaze-y, fuzzy freak out. Next up is the Misfits/Damned horror-pop, by way of Johnny Marr, "Party Boy," an uptempo, punchy dance rocker from his latest LP release, Make Way For Love, which is available now via Dead Oceans.

Williams is currently touring Australia and Europe.

The Damned's forthcoming April 13 2018 album Evil Spirits (pre-order on CD)
& pre-order on Lp/vinyl precedes this summer's performance by the
veteran UK band at Burger Boogaloo 2018

If over the past few weeks you’ve driven by Telegraph Ave. and 40th Streets near the MacArthur BART station in North Oakland and looked up you’ll have noticed the big billboard for this year’s Burger Boogaloo festival that takes every summer just a few blocks away at Mosswood Park. That's where the excellent annual two-day outdoor festival will be again happening this year on the weekend of June 30th and July 1st. As seen in the new billboard’s large font, returning for his fourth year as the penultimate host will be the eternally entertaining John Waters. Meanwhile the 2018 musician lineup continues the quality hard-rocking caliber of previous Boogaloo lineups (last year Iggy Pop and The Buzzcocks ruled as headliners) with 2018 top billing going to Devo and The Damned. The Damned’s appearance coincides with recent news of the band’s first new album in a decade and their first since 2008’s  So, Who’s Paranoid. Entitled Evil Spirits the decidedly retro-sounding, soon-to-drop forthcoming Tony Visconti produced album will be released a week from today on April 13th.  But in the meantime you can pre-order Evil Spirits on CD and Evil Spirits on Lp/vinyl.
