Amoeba Music Hip-Hop Top 5: 05: 05: 2017

1: Homeboy Sandman Veins LP  (Stones Throw/Fat Beats)

2: Onra Chinoiseries 3 (also avail on vinylLP) (All City Records)

3: Brother Ali All The Beauty In This Whole Life (also avail on vinylLP) (Rhymesayers Ent)

4: Dilated Peoples The Platform LP (Get On Down)

5: Blockhead Uncle Tony's Coloring Book LP (Young Heavy Souls)

Number one new release this week, out today May 5th 2017 (happy Cinco De Mayo!) is the latest from the always amazing Homeboy Sandman: Veins LP  via Stones Throw / Fat Beats.  The vinyl only (so far) album features such killer tracks as the advance songs "Bamboo" and "Clarity" (see both music videos below). And while the ten song Veins album may only clock in at just over 24 minutes in length, as I have stated here before, Homeboy Sandman's unique intricate deep rhymes pack more clever thought-provoking lyrics  into one song than the average contemporary hip-hop artist manages to do in an entire album!

1: Oddisee The Iceberg (MMG/Fat Beats) (2017)

Each year in the second half of March, with Record Store Day just weeks away, record labels traditionally have kicked into full gear with a non-stop flow of releases coming out. And this year is no exception with some incredible hip-hop being released by big and small labels on both vinyl and CD and increasingly more on cassette too. Check out the recent Amoeblog on boutique label Get On Down's exclusive Record Store Day (April 22nd 2017) releases that includes an informative interview with Papa D who is one of the partners of the label that's an imprint of Traffic Entertainment. Peep and/or download as PDF the full list of Record Store Day 2017 releases (hip-hop and beyond) here. Meantime new releases to arrive into Amoeba this week include Washington DC super-talent Oddisee' latest full-length release The Iceberg.  Again from Mello Music Group (MMG), who just last year released both Oddisee' Alwasta EP his The Odd Tape album, this latest is a dual release with Fat Beats under their MMG/Fat Beats combo which we can assume means that there is a vinyl version coming soon. Clocking in at just under 48 minutes The Iceberg's 14 tracks include the song "NNGE" that features album guest Toine. See the new accompanying music video below.

Now in its tenth year, Record Store Day has grown exponentially into a widely celebrated day of anticipation for record collectors fiending for the exclusive releases associated with the annual retail shopping day that this year falls on April 22nd. [See the full list of 2017 Record Store Day releases]. Some labels are better than others when it comes to their choice of vinyl and CD releases and/or the packaging of said releases. And one of the consistently better labels is Get On Down, an imprint of Traffic  Entertainment, who never fail to impress with their choice of quality music and lush packaging / presentation of their RSD releases. In fact four years ago they won an Adapter Award when the Record Store Day organization chose the label for the Record Store Day Release of the Year 2013 award. That was for that year's GZA Liquid Swords reissue: the 4-LP “Chess Box” (also avail on 4 CD) that was a popular item at Amoeba's three stores that year.
