When we found out that we’d lost him, we all walked around in shock and sorrow. Then, in the spirit of friendship, The Allman Brothers Band's Eat a Peach came over the PA system as a tribute to Allen. The customers didn’t understand the significance, but we did. I’m sure we all listened with fresh ears to the music Allen loved best as we thought about the hole that now exists within our family.

Allen was here from the very beginning when our Berkeley store opened in 1990. Before that, he worked with Amoeba co-owner Dave Prinz at Captain Video. He came to us at the SF store with his deep love of all things Amoeba and with his extraordinary customer service skills that, over the years, developed a strong and loyal following. Allen would stop at nothing to find his customers exactly what they wanted. “That’s the fun, that’s what I live for,” he told the SF Chronicle for an article, published on July 17, 2016, in which he was honored for his excellent customer service. To say his customers will miss him is an understatement.

To say that we will miss him is an even greater understatement. Our hearts are heavy as we think about the family he left behind -- his daughters Sarah and Amy, and their mother Debbie. If you knew Allen, you knew how much he loved them. He was always so proud and quick with a story about his girls.

Whenever there is a transition in the life of someone I care for, I recite a Gaelic blessing. This time, I write it for Allen. I don't know if it's appropriate by others' standards, but I'm sure Allen would have spoken softly with me and asked me to recite it to him. I know he would have smiled at me and touched my hand.

May the road rise up to meet you.
May the wind be always at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face;
the rains fall soft upon your fields
and until we meet again,
may God hold you in the palm of His hand.
