Begin (CD)
The Millennium

Amoeba Review
Tiffany Anders 08/26/2010
The Millennium were the brainchild of producers Curt Boettcher and Gary Usher and stemmed from the duo’s other brilliant studio project, Sagittarius. Begin was the group’s sole release and remains one of the best psychedelic pop albums of its time, on par with the genius melodic song structures of The Beach Boys and the bittersweet feel of The Left Banke. The album opens with “Prelude,” an energetic instrumental, which features lovely harpsichord and bombastic drums and segues into the blissful ear candy of “To Claudia On Thursday.” Other highlights include “The Island” and “The Know It All.” The release was one of the most expensive albums ever produced by Columbia (at the time), but it proved to be money well spent: it is only rarely that you come across something that simply sounds this good.
