REVOLUTIONS: The Selecter DJ Kirk & Michael Saretsky
Amoeba San Francisco - May 25th @ 1:00pm
On Saturday, May 25th, we welcome The Selecter DJ Kirk & Michael Saretsky to the Amoeba stage to share a set of all things soul for our Revolutions DJ series! Both have been representing all facets of soul music for decades around the world. We're happy they can put in an appearance before their annual Break It Loose! Bay Area Soul Weekender coming up June 6th -- June 10th at various venues across the bay.
The Selecter DJ Kirk (Sweater Funk / Alcatraz Soul Club)
The Selecter DJ Kirk (aka Kirk Michael Harper) is a San Francisco native who has been DJing and producing events since 1982. He is best known for his all-embracing knowledge of soul through the decades, a nice record collection and his love of modern soul, disco, boogie, and soulful house music. Kirk has been involved in every aspect of music as a deejay, writer, event-producer, and owner/manager of several venues. Kirk was Professor Soul from Wha-a-am Magazine and a founding member of Secret Society Scooter Club, San Francisco from 1984 to 1989. From 1991 through 2008, he was a founding partner and general manager of nightclub venues Mr. Fives and 330 Ritch Street, working with everyone from Isaac Hayes and Terry Callier to The Brand New Heavies, Amy Winehouse, and Gilles Peterson. Throughout his career, Kirk’s love of everything soul, his ability to play positive uplifting sets from any era, mix seamlessly, and get the dance floor movin’ is what makes the “Mayor of SF” one of kind.
Michael Saretsky (Alcatraz Soul Club)
Michael Saretsky has been DJing soul, funk, and classic Jamaican music for over 15 years, from the East Coast to the West Coast, and global guest spots inbetween. Michael’s 45 obsession began with '60s reggae. Digging across the mid-Atlantic U.S. in the early 2000s turned him on to more local flavors, and his appetite for soul and funk records became insatiable. From digging to the DJ booth, Michael helped organize a handful of monthly parties in DC, Philly, and New York over a 10-year stretch. While appreciating the broader umbrella of the “Northern Soul” movement, Michael champions no particular sound, style, or era in the realm of soul music. Storming, funky, moody, modern, whatever -- if it’s good, he’ll play it. Having moved west a few years ago, Michael now helps run the monthly Alcatraz Soul Club party at the Makeout Room in the Mission and collaborates with other DJ crews in the Bay Area to throw the annual Bay Area Soul Weekender.
