New "What's In My Bag?" Episode With VEEP's Timothy Simons

Tim Simmons

Timothy Simons is an actor best known for his role as Jonah Ryan on HBO's Veep. Ryan is a self-proclaimed "go to guy" as the White House liaison to the Vice President's office. Much to the annoyance VEEPof the Veep staff, character Ryan takes great pride working for the President and not the Vice-President. Ironically, the President cannot stand Ryan, which makes for great comedy.

Timothy Simons studied theater at the University of Maine and developed his chops with the Chicago-based theatre group, Hypocrites. In 2008, he and his wife relocated to Los Angeles and just two years later, Simons made his television debut on Veep

Simons recently hosted a charity auction at Amoeba Hollywood and saved some time to do a little shopping and film an episode of What’s In My Bag?. He has a bunch of great picks, including several films, as you might expect from an actor who takes his work seriously. Simons starts off with a copy of Puplhead, a collection of essays written by John Jeremiah Sullivan. He makes a point to talk about Blow Out, the 1981 thriller by director Brian De Palma and starring John Travolta as a sound effects technician. Simons also finds the classic Charlie Chaplin film, Modern Times, and picks up a little country music with Doc Watson’s Definitive Collection and John Prine's In Spite of Ourselves.

Recap: September Charity Auction to Benefit Arts Education at Amoeba Hollywood

Posted by Amoebite, September 8, 2014 02:43pm | Post a Comment

Timothy SimonsAmoeba Hollywood was the place to be on Saturday, September 6 where Timothy Simons (Jonah from VEEP) highlighted and auctioned off all kinds of cool and crazy stuff to benefit the Theater Arts Program at Los Angeles High School of the Arts. With his droll sense of humor and his whimsical stream-of-consciousness descriptions of each item, he had the audience chuckling and bidding. The more they chuckled, the higher they bid. He raised more than $1,200.00 in bids which, when matched by Amoeba, means $2,400.00 for the LAHSA Theater program!

"Here is...a Beatles pack. The Beatles. Maybe you've heard of them....a band from Australia a bunch of years ago who made their debut US television appearance on the Johnny Carson show."

The deadpan delivery and ongoing ironies made for a highly entertaining afternoon. The sheer brilliance in his introduction of a Lynyrd Skynyrd wall tapestry...well, you had to be there. This month's auction items were also amazing, including autographed VEEP items, concert tickets to sold out shows and backstage access, as well as weird and wonderful promo items. As Tim slyly delivered up each item and shared memories, I wondered how many of the kids in the audience took his recounting as gospel. It was all in good fun for a good cause!

  • Lyndyrd Skynrd banket/wall tapestry - $15.00
  • Simpsons lunchbox + Trader Joe's gift card - $65.00

(Wherein I begrudgingly mumble the Body Electric.)

exercise is fucked
Bollocks.

I hope you won’t think less of me, dear reader, but I’ve started going to the gym regularly. But wait – it gets worse – I’ve been going there to exercise.

I realize this sort of behavior doesn’t gracefully jive with my established persona; I live my life and make choices guided by the principle: What would Mrs. Dalloway do if Laurie Anderson was scripting her fate? If someone’s going to cast an actor to play me in a film, I aspire for the obvious choice to be Liv Ullman, or – if the film’s merely going to focus on my nervous breakdown, circa 1996 – Mink Stole, please.

Mink Stole
"I can neither live with this crushing depression, nor tolerate anymore cheap, turquoise jewelry."
- Mink Stole as the author in his early 20s

None of these women would be caught dead wearing the sweatpants and V-neck undershirt I don for my workout routine, nor subject themselves to my Sisyphean Stairmaster set – though the look on my face when I approach the scale in the men’s locker-room does, I think, parallel certain expressions Ms. Ullman crafted in some of the darker scenes of Ansikte mot Ansikte.

July Charity Auction Recap

Posted by Amoebite, July 9, 2012 07:15pm | Post a Comment
Tim Simons at AmoebaOn Saturday, July 7 we had our monthly charity auction at Amoeba Hollywood, this time with the hilarious musings and dry quips from Tim Simons, actor and comedian from the HBO show Veep. Tim was pinch-hitting for Matt Walsh, also from Veep and the movie High Road, who had a last minute conflict.

Tim was so gracious and such a good sport stepping in - never having experienced one of our auctions - but his droll sense of humor and his relaxed wry way of nudging up the bids was awesome! We had quite a crowd around the DJ booth, and folks were filling the aisles of used and new rock during the 40 minute auction to benefit Camp Crescent Moon, the nation's first and oldest summer camp for children with sickle cell disease between the ages of 8-14 years.

Here are a few of the highlights:
  • Doctor Who signed Blu-ray $36.00
  • KISS Collector's Glass Set with Natural History Museum passes $22.00
  • X Games Skate Deck $15.00
  • Madonna Foil Poster $10.00
  • Record Store Day Limited Bag and Shirt with 45s $32.00
  • Ariel Pink tickets with T-Rex t-shirt  $50
  • Eskuche Headphones with Chemical Brothers Mousepad $25.00
  • Trader Joe's Gift Card with Lil Rascals Lunchbox $46.00
  • Family Guy DVD set $25.00
  • Motley Crue signed book $10.00
  • My Morning Jacket Tickets $60.00
  • Lana del Rey signed 7" $20
  • Bob Marley poster and button pack $10.00
  • Urban Outfitters Gift Card with Presidents Clinton and Bush $55.00
  • Rolling Stones canvas poster $24.00
  • Amoeba in-store VIP packages $46.00 and $47.00 each
