If you already have plans to attend today's annual Oakland hip-hop festival, Hiero Day 2017, or are on the fence about going this video version Amoeblog, featuring many of  the acts playing today, is designed as a preview teaser of what to expect at today's all day event: 11am to 7pm in West Oakland at 18th and Poplar streets [Note new location this year].  Described as an outdoor festival, concert, food, and block party where thousands come to celebrate all that is good about Oakland, this year’s lineup once again offers a wonderful cross-section of artists. In addition to the hometown producers of the peaceful and uplifting event that bears their name (they always close out the concert event), that is now in its sixth successful year, there is a diverse lineup of emcees and DJs planned for the various stages today.

These include Berkeley's Lil B The Based God, who donned dreads and innovative fashion at the recent VMA MTV music awards, has been in the news a lot lately for various things including his public beef with young b'ball talent Lonzo Ball who mistakenly called hip-hop legend Nas played out and no longer relevant unlike such current stars as Future.  Lil B, who is said to be working with Nas and his Mass Appeal, has been vigilant in his defense of the famous Queensbridge emcee. The audio-only video for Lil B's new track “Rawest Rapper Alive” off his recently unveiled Black Ken release is below along with a slew of other videos by many of today's performers.

Hardworking, humble, & hella talented DJ Shortkut @ 45 Sessions New Parish JZLim Photography

"If I was to end all this tomorrow and I had an album, then I would be happy," DJ Shortkut confided when I caught up with the hardworking, highly respected, and diversely talented San Francisco DJ in his hometown this week. Feeling "exhausted" but with a wide smile on his face, the heavy in-demand globe-trotting DJ, who is booked on average 4 to 5 nights a week, was just back home in the States from Asia where he's been spending a lot of time in recent months including at Red Bull Thre3Style events with the recently reunited Invisibl Skratch Piklz (ISP), along with Qbert and D-Styles, with whom he recorded the anticipated album The 13th Floor. Despite the fact that he was honored with the Grand Wizard Theodore Lifetime Achievement Award for his contributions to the development of scratching & DJ culture, and that he holds membership of three of the most revered turntablist ensembles in the history of the genre - ISP, The Beat Junkies, and Triple Threat DJs (with Vinroc and Apollo) - and has recorded with each of them, plus released a stack of his own amazing solo DJ mixes encompassing hip-hop and dancehall and other styles, he has never released a DJ Shortkut album. But that is all about to change the Daly City DJ born Jonathan Cruz told me this week following an impressive turntable set he threw down at Guitar Center on Van Ness celebrating the launch of Thud Rumble and DJ Qbert's TRX Scratch Mixer.

Amoeba Music Hollywood Hip-Hop Top Five: Week Ending 04:11:14

1) Chuck Inglish Convertibles (Federal Prism)

2) Freddie Gibbs, Madlib Pinata (Madlib Invazion)

3) Quasimoto Planned Attack / Talkin' Shit [Picture Disc] (7") (Stones Throw)

4) YG My Krazy Life (Def Jam)

5) Kendrick Lamar  Good kid, m.A.A.d city (Aftermath)

Once again this week at Amoeba among the popular recent hip-hop releases is the Freddie Gibbs, Madlib collaboration Pinata that is in the number two slot on this week's new Amoeba chart from the Hollywood store. The album, that appears on Madlib's Madlib Invazion label,  continues to also sell well at both Bay Area Amoeba Music stores. No doubt the duo's recent, reportedly excellent Bay Area concert helped boost interest in the new album. Another Madlib related release on this week's chart is the Quasimoto 7" picture disc "Planned Attack" and "Talkin' Shit" on Stones Throw Records. Other new Amoeba Hip-Hop chart entries include YG's My Krazy Life on Def Jam, Kendrick Lamar's unstoppable Good kid, m.A.A.d city on Aftermath, and the number one album this week: the brand new Chuck Inglish album Convertibles on Federal Prism (note there will be a vinyl LP version dropping on April 29th).
