The xx What's In My Bag? Amoeba Music

Romy Madley Croft and Jamie Smith of The xx stopped by Amoeba Hollywood recently, digging through the bins and finding some cool records, T-shirts, and posters. "A band that we all really love is Chromatics," Croft told us as she pulled the Portland synth-pop band's In The City II EP out of her shopping bag. "I just love the instrumentals and stuff on here," she continued. "They have always been a big influence to us and they do a great cover of 'I'm On Fire' by Bruce Springsteen." Croft and Smith found a diverse mix of albums for our latest What's In My Bag? episode, explaining the personal significance of each and chiming in on each other's choices.

UK minimalist indie electro pop band The xx consists of vocalist/guitarist Croft, vocalist/bassist Oliver Sim, and producer Smith, aka Jamie xx. Influenced equally by post-punk and R&B, the band formed in 2005, when Croft and Sim attended school together. They posted their early work on their MySpace The xx - I see Youaccount, which attracted attention from the Young Turks label and led to the release of their critically-acclaimed debut LP xx in 2009. Seemingly overnight, The xx seemed to be taking over the world, with career-defining appearances at All Tomorrow's Parties, Coachella, Sasquatch, Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, and Austin City Limits on the books. In 2010, they took home the prestigious Mercury Prize.

Top Ten "I Don't Wanna" Songs

Posted by Billyjam, December 3, 2014 10:20am | Post a Comment

While walking through the subway station tunnel at 59th Street station here in New York, I heard someone across the platform loudly and repeatedly singing the refrain "I don't wanna, I don't wanna, I don't wanna..." until the increasingly distant voice trailed off completely as I climbed the steps to the street at Central Park South. The song kept echoing in my head as I tried to figure out what it was. I couldn't pinpoint it, but then I realized that it could be one of countless songs that have those same three words. "I don't wanna" is something people say a lot and naturally spin into song lyrics, hence this Amoeblog post. Here are the Top Ten "I Don't Wanna" songs with those words in its title or lyrics.

This list includes heavy hits such as Minor Threat's "I Don't Wanna Hear It" (my favorite of them all, and a song that has been covered by many other artists, including Slayer). Then there's The Ramones' song "I Don't Wanna Grow Up" from their !Adios Amigos! album and the Descendents' title track I Don't Want To Grow Up, both of which are included. The Ramones recorded several other "I Don't Wanna" songs, including "I Don't Wanna Go Down To The Basement," "Don't Wanna Be Learned/Don't Wanna Be Tamed," and "I Don't Walk Around With You." However they did "Wanna Sniff Some Glue" - all four of these Ramones songs (some in demo format) can be found on the wonderful 2001 collection entitled The Ramones.

Fools In Love Songs

Posted by Billyjam, April 1, 2013 01:31pm | Post a Comment
There are a lot of songs on the topic of fools and even more songs on being in love. But for today, April Fool's Day, I have assembled some random songs about both - about fools in love or people falling foolishly into love. We've all been there and done that and hence can relate, no doubt, to the selection of songs I've assembled below (via YouTube) about fools in love.

Included is the song "Fools In Love" by Joe Jackson - the single off his great album Look Sharp in which he cynically muses, albeit from first hand experience, on: "Fools in love, are there any creatures more pathetic? Fools in love, never knowing when they've lost the game." Other songs about fools in love include the 1956 #1 hit from the very young Frankie Lymon & the Teenagers "Why Do Fools Fall In Love" (a live TV rendition from 1956 from WNEW's The Frankie Lane Show with a funny interview beforehand). The song, which has been covered by folks such as Diana Ross and Joe Ely, poses that eternal question: "Why do fools fall in love?"  Also below is Journey-man Steve Perry's 80's pop rock ballad mega-hit "Foolish Heart" (off his Street Talk LP) and Rod Stewart's version of Elvin Bishop's hit "Fooled Around And Fell In Love."
