Damn! Kendrick Lamar has done it again with his amazing new album DAMN. (Aftermath) that arrived into Amoeba this past Friday (April 14th) two days before the acclaimed Compton rapper's Coachella performance yesterday that included songs from the new album that features the previously released single "HUMBLE." (see the Dave Meyers & the little homies directed music video below). With refreshingly unpretentious cover art, that looks like it was slapped together in a couple minutes, and clocking in at 55 minutes,  DAMN. is the artist's fourth album and the anticipated follow up to 2015's critically and commercially acclaimed To Pimp A Butterfly (also avail on LP/vinyl).

Best of 2016

With the holiday season fast approaching and 2016 drawing to an end, we decided to take a look back at some of our favorite releases for the year. Staff from all three of our stores --  in Hollywood, San Francisco, and Berkeley -- shared their picks for the year's best music and movies and told us a little about what made them so awesome. So hop in the Amoeba sleigh with us, won't you, as we go on a magical holiday journey through the early months of 2016 till now, adventuring from world music to rock 'n' roll and everything in between, savoring the most memorable works from some of our most beloved artists. (It might even give you a few swell ideas for record-shaped stocking stuffers.)

Best of 2016 - rock

Anohni Hopelessness

ANOHNI - Hopelessness

I have been a fan of Anohni (formerly known as Antony & the Johnsons) for a long time now. She has another one of those distinctive voices that there is no confusing for someone else. Another great album produced by the amazing ANOHNI. The words in the songs are so full of emotion and power it is almost too much to handle sometimes. This album somehow feels like it is in the future. The songs are very set in the present. But the music really takes me to the future. Or at least makes me feel like we will be OK as long as we have ANOHNI to help guide us through the uncertain future. - Brad, Hollywood

Grouplove What's In My Bag? Ameoba Music

"I lived in New York for 10 years... Every time I was having, like, a cool moment; cut my bangs, I got a leather jacket, Spoon came on," says Grouplove's Hannah Hooper during their recent What's In My Bag? interview. She's talking about Spoon's beloved fourth album Kill The Moonlight, which features the now classic "The Way We Get By." The vocalist/keyboardist wryly continues, "we're parents now so we need...a lot of leather jackets in our life."

Grouplove Big Mess Amoeba MusicLos Angeles indie rockers Grouplove formed in 2009 after the members met at the Ikarus artist commune in Crete. The band released a self-titled EP in 2010, heading out on tour as the support act for Florence and the Machine and The Joy Formidable that same year. Grouplove signed to Canvasback/Atlantic Records, who reissued the band's breakthrough EP in January 2011. Soon afterward, Grouplove embarked on a co-headlining tour with Foster the People and played Lollapalooza and Glastonbury.

Alessia Cara What's In My Bag? Amoeba Music

Canadian R&B/pop singer and songwriter Alessia Cara was recently at Amoeba Hollywood looking for some cool new records and we got a chance to chat with her for our "What's In My Bag?" series. Take, for instance, Amy Winehouse's debut album, Frank, which is one of Cara's all-time favorite albums. "It's just a really interesting mixture of jazz and hip hop." The first track, "Stronger Than Me," especially stood out to Cara. "The entire album is beautiful, I love it," she says.

Alessia Cara began her career by performing covers of popular songs on YouTube. She attracted the attention of Def Jam, who released her official debut single, "Here," in 2015. Her debut full-length studio album, Know-It-All, appeared later that year, with "Here" landing the singer her first top-five Billboard single.

That same year, she made her first appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. In 2016, she took home the award for Breakthrough Artist of the Year at the Juno Awards. After touring with Coldplay in the first half of 2016, she then embarked on her own solo headlining tour of North America. She was nominated for the BET Awards 2016 Best New Artist and the American Music Awards 2016 New Artist of the Year.
