On Saturday, April 13th, Amoeba SF, along with hundreds of independently owned music stores around the world, celebrated Record Store Day. We opened at 8am for the first time in our 12-year history of RSD-ing. This may sound crazy early, but we opened the doors to a line that went down Haight Street, around the corner onto Stanyan, and down to Waller! RSD limited edition releases is what this crowd of early risers was after. If you missed the boat on this holy day, fear not as we still have a few titles online HERE.

In addition to the RSD limited edition releases, Amoeba SF had DJs from 8am to 3pm, setting the tone for the shopping extravaganza. Massive kudos to all of our DJs (Maria Victoria & Dizzy Miss Lizzy of Black Rhythm Happening, Mario Muse, Carolyn Keddy, Smash Hunter, B-Side Brujas, Digital KitKat), but most of all to DJ Bearzbub who played a bitchin' 8am set that has us all dancing in the aisles.

Yes, another glorious Record Store Day has come and gone, but that doesn't mean you need to wait another year the celebrate the virtues of vinyl. All three Amoeba Music locations are open year-round, fighting the good fight and listening to the righteous tunes.

Here's some photos from Saturday. Please see the complete set HERE.

Top 10 Record Store Day 2019 Hip-Hop Vinyl [+ links to purchase @ 5am Sunday April 14]: Too $hort, Pete Rock, Ed O.G., RZA, ODB etc

Posted by Billyjam, April 13, 2019 10:21am | Post a Comment

Today is 2019 Record Store Day (RSD), the twelfth annual music holiday celebrating independent record stores all over including the three Amoeba locations (Berkeley, SF, LA) with all genres represented including, of course, hip-hop; a genre proudly born out of vinyl manipulation and sampling of records. This Amoeblog focuses on the best hip-hop vinyl picks for RSD 2019 including a top ten chart of this year’s exclusive RSD releases available at Amoeba. Note that while all are available on a first come, first served in-store purchase today, that many leftover titles will be available for sale online tomorrow (Sunday April 14th) from 5am local Pacific time. The Top 10 chart includes links to each of these but not that there is no guarantee that all of them will still be available tomorrow morning. Also note that all RSD sales, whether today instore or tomorrow online, are limited to one copy per title per customer.

While traditionally many RSD releases are reissues of long out of print on vinyl titles, special colored vinyl LP & 12" reissues, plus first time 7" pressings of previously released tracks there are also many brand new releases unveiled on Record Store Day or else released the day before (April 12) with an alternate version for RSD. This year these include such titles as the tight Vinnie  Paz  x Tragedy Khadafi Camouflage Regime LP via Jedi Mind Tricks and the Enemy Soil label plus the collaborative album from rapper Diabolic and producer Vanderslice and their anticipated album Collusion. Pictured right this is a must-get for any fan of roots hip-hop; IE golden era and nineties hip-hop layered with clever lyricism and soulful head-nodding production. Released via the always dependable hip-hop label Coalmine the vinyl for this new album comes in two different colors including two ‘pot luck’ color variants; Diabolic’s “Deviled Egg (white/orange color-in-color) and Vanderslice’s Hawaiian Shirt (white w/ blue and yellow splatter) with artwork designed by FRKO (Action Bronson), equipped with a dual-sided insert, as detailed by the RSD curators

This Mini Turntable Will Make You Smile On Record Store Day

RSD3 Mini Turntable Record Store Day

For the past several years, Crosley has created special limited edition turntables for Record Store Day, but this year they're releasing something they haven't done before and it might just be the tiniest, cutest turntable you've ever seen.

Behold the RSD3 Mini Turntable! Designed to play 3" records, the RSD3 Mini Turntable might be small, but it's mighty. It's a belt-drive turntable with an AT3600 moving-magnet cartridge, adjustable pitch control, fully supported platter, and aux out port with RCA adapter. It even has a built-in speaker, but you can connect it to your regular, full-size speakers using the RCA cable adapter that comes with it. Did we mention it also has a perfectly tiny dust cover to protect the turntable when it's not being used?

Three-inch records were briefly available in Japan during the early 2000s, just before the worldwide vinyl resurgence began. Fourteen years later, a team of people from Record Store Day traveled to Japan and visited the only factory that used to make these “8ban” records. After a year of development and collaboration, the RSD3 Mini Turntable by Crosley was born.

Of course, you need something to PLAY on a mini turntable. The limited edition RSD3 Mini Turntable comes with a Foo-Fighters "Big Me" 3” vinyl record, sealed inside the box. Additionally, Third Man Records and Epitaph Records have created blind box sets containing four individual 3" vinyl singles. Record Store Day has also announced plans to release more 3" records in the coming months, so you will have even more selection in the future.
