Top Ten Hip-Hop Albums on Vinyl/LP April 26 2018

01: Common Can I Borrow A Dollar? [Record Store Day] (2LP + 7”) (Nature Sounds)

Due to a combination of factors, from overstocking to under-publicizing of specific titles, there are currently a limited number of leftover titles from last Saturday's big Record Store Day 2018; half of which make up this week's Top Ten Hip-Hop Albums on Vinyl/LP list. These include in the number position the special Record Store Day vinyl reissue of Common's Can I Borrow A Dollar? via Nature Sounds that is the artist's out of print first album as a 2LP set plus a bonus 7" inch single featuring the Common B-side track "Can I Bust" and an instrumental version of the single/album track "Breaker." Can I Borrow A Dollar?  is Common’s oft overlooked / well worth revisiting debut album from 1992, two years before the release of his breakout hit sophomore album Resurrection (feat. “I Used To Love H.E.R.”). The album also harks back to the Chicago artist's early years when he was still known as Common Sense but this new issue of the album, like all reissues post-1995, has his name on the cover adjusted to simply Common

As the line snaked around the corner and happy record shoppers scored some of the coolest picks from the menu of exclusive RSD titles, Record Store Day 2018 at Amoeba Hollywood kicked into high gear. Outside the store, shoppers were treated to free beverages from Soylent and Hubert's Lemonade, temporary tattoos, dog and cat food samples from Weruva, pizza from Delicious Pizza, and ice cream from Ice Cream Ian and his truck, courtesy of Warner Bros. Records. Music fans took their chances with our fantastic prize wheel, with each $1 spin raising funds for the Downtown Women's Center while others sat for Draw the Line Entertainment's caricature artist.

Record Store Day 2018 at Amoeba HollywoodInside the store, the festivities kept going. Saturday, April 21, 2018, marked the eleventh year of what has become the greatest holiday on earth. Yes, Amoeba SF, along with hundreds of independently owned music stores across the world, celebrated Record Store Day and it was glorious. We opened at 9am this year to a line that went down Haight Street and around the corner onto Stanyan, and around the corner again onto Waller! What could possibly make music fans line up so early on a Saturday, you ask? Why, limited edition releases, of course! This year's smash hits included Phish's Billy Breathes, a reissue of Chicano Batman's debut album, Arcade Fire on translucent blue vinyl, and so many more.

Folks were also lined up to get this year's limited edition Amoeba SF RSD t-shirt (screen printed by our friends at Free Gold Watch), partake in our sales, and groove to the happening sounds of our guest DJs Bearzbub, Simon Guzman, and The B-Side Brujas. At 1pm, a whole new crop of fans showed up to see Twin Shadow perform live.
