Then with his partner in rhyme in side project Armand Hammer, Elucid he guests on “Be Safe.”  Other guests include Hemlock Ernst, Marq Spekt and Vic Spencer.  Below is the audio-only video for the killer album track featuring Aesop Rock, “Kiss The Cook.”

Hip-Hop Rap-Up, Week End 01.05.13: E-Lit's Picks N Predictions, BPos, First Light (Opio + Pep Love), Sean Born, Skillz

Posted by Billyjam, January 5, 2013 04:20am | Post a Comment
The music business may close down for the holidays with hardly any new releases in early January but there are still new videos coming out like the three below.  Also below E-Lit at the Amoeba Berkeley store shares his top ten picks of the past year as well as his predictions for 2013 in hip-hop. Skillz just dropped "2012 Rap Up" but announced publicly and in the song that it will be his very last annual "rap up" after ten years and doing his anticipated year in review songs - and seen others enter the year-rap up field like popular YouTube rapper DeStorm

The videos below include the new Kev Brown produced track from Sean Born "Grandeur," and the brand new (two day old) video for the newest Hiero joint: Opio + Pep Love's (aka First Light) song "Lighters" from the duo's forthcoming debut album Fallacy Fantasy which will arrive in Amoeba March 12th. Immediately below is  the new video from SF hip-hop crew BPos for their song "Balance" (from the group's last release Pos Tapes Volume Three). The video was filmed by Inkfat and BPos during BPos' 2012 Super Hero Pool Party Tour, and the song's beat is by Aspect McCarthy (ghosNOTES) while the video itself was made by BPos member Goodword.

Amoeba Music San Francisco Hip-Hop Top Five Chart Week Ending 11:02:12

1) Kendrick Lamar Good Kid M.A.A.D City  (Aftermath)

2) Macklemore The Heist (Macklemore LLC)

3) P.O.S. We Don't Even Live Here (Rhymesayers)

4) Lupe Fiasco Food & Liquor II: The Great American Rap Album Pt. 1 (Atlantic)

5) MellowHype Numbers (Columbia/3 Ent)

This latest hip-hop top five chart from the San Francisco Amoeba store includes many of the same new releases that have been selling well in recent weeks at both the Berkeley and Hollywood Amoeba stores including Odd Future spinoff MellowHype Numbers , Lupe Fiasco's Food & Liquor II: The Great American Rap Album Pt. 1 - the sequel to the Chicago emcee's 2006 debut Lupe Fiasco's Food & Liquor, and Kendrick Lamar's universally popular major label debut Good Kid M.A.A.D City   on his mentor Dr. Dre's Aftermath label via Interscope. The album, which looks set to bring Compton back to the center of the rap map, is not only extremely popular at each of the Amoeba stores where it went straight to number one since its recent release but also across the nation. It debuted at No. 1 on both Billboard's R&B/Hip-Hop and rap albums charts, and at No. 2 on Billboard's Top 200 albums chart (Taylor Swift's latest mega-hit Red edged it out for the number one pop chart position).

E-Lit @ Amoeba Berkeley overviews new Hip-Hop releases of the week ending 10:19:2012

Amoeba Music Berkeley Hip-Hop Top Five: Week Ending 10:19:12

1) K'Naan Country, God Or The Girl (Octane/A&M)

2) Zion I Shadow Boxing (Live Up Records)

3) Macklemore The Heist (Macklemore, LLC.)

4) Prince Paul & DJ P. Forreal Negroes On Ice (The Red Lion Group)

5) Rapsody The Idea of Beautiful (Jamla Records)

Thanks to the ever knowledgeable, hip-hop loving E-Lit at the Berkeley Amoeba store for taking time to do a run down of all the new and recent hip-hop releases at Amoeba both vinyl and CD. In the new top five chart the number seller is the brand new K'Naan Country, God Or The Girl on Octone/A&M. "Love is harder than war. I’ve had the chance to write about my experiences in a difficult and violent life. But when the suffering and the pain is something that comes from within me, it’s harder to react and to write about that," said the Somali Canadian multi-talent of the new album's content which features the lead pop-rap single that dropped several months back, "Is There Anybody Out There?" and features Nelly Furtado (see below). On Country, God Or The Girl is the internationally popular artist's attempt to, he says, address "the internal wars, rather than the external ones, which I'd been preoccupied with on my previous albums."

Other releases on the new chart include the ever-popular Seattle, WA rapper Macklemore, who earned many new fans c/o his recent viral video for "Thrift Shop," legendary producer Prince Paul teaming up with DJ P. Forreal, and North Carolina female emcee Rapsody with her most impressive official debut The Idea of Beautiful on Jamla Records. The album on which she displays a sick flow again begs the age old question in hip-hop: how come there are still such a small ratio of female rappers to male rappers? Oakland duo Zion I's newest album, which is their eight to date, continues to sell as the pair of Zumbi and Amp Live continue their current tour. Other excellent new/recent releases include Homeboy Sandman's First of A Living Breed on Stones Throw (see video below for new album track "Not Really"), and the brand album which drops next week from Rhymesayers artist P.O.S. We Don't Even Live Here which takes hip-hop into whole new territory. Note the CD comes with real nice packaging with a great booklet with some strange but intriguing photo art.
