Charity Auction at Amoeba Hollywood

We were so excited to have our very own Brandon Mather wielding the auction gavel and bringing the laughs at Amoeba Hollywood's charity auction for the Los Angeles LGBT Center on Saturday, June 4th. Brandon Mather is an actor and comedian who has appeared in short films, a music video, and on stage in Point Break Live. He deftly (and hilariously!) auctioned off a crazy array of concert tickets, collectibles, and other things you never knew you had to have. As always, Amoeba matched all winning bids up---which means we doubled the money going to charity!

All proceeds from our June charity auction benefited the Los Angeles LGBT Center, the world’s largest provider of programs and services for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people. Their youth center on Highland helps serve homeless LGBT youth by providing housing, meals, showers, counseling and education programs, support groups, employment resources, as well as art and music groups and HIV testing. Visit their center on Highland or their website to find out more and to get involved.

Los Angeles LGBT Center’s Out Under the Stars series will screen Amy Heckerling’s ’90s teen classic Clueless on Aug. 28 at Hollywood Forever.

Tickets start at $20 and are available here. Doors are at 7 p.m., and the screening starts at dusk. Picnics on Hollywood Forever’s lawn are encouraged (beer and wine are fine to bring).

Amoeba will be on hand with a booth and tent, featuring the prize wheel. We’ll have gay cinema and rainbow Amoeba T-shirts for sale, so come by and say hello!

The screening is presented by Los Angeles Women’s Network and Young Professionals Council. Proceeds from the event benefit the Los Angeles LGBT Center. For more information on the center’s services, please visit lalgbtcenter.org.

Clueless, starring Alicia Silverstone as a superficial but well-intentioned teen living in Beverly Hills, is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. Recap: Kumail Nanjiani & Emily V Gordon Hosted a Charity Auction at Amoeba Hollywood for the LA LGBT Center

Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V Gordon at Amoeba Hollywood

Saturday's charity auction was a blast! Our friends Kumail Nanjiani (from Silicon Valley, Portlandia, Adventure Time, The Meltdown with Jonah & Kumail, The Indoor Kids, The X-Files) and Emily V Gordon (author, booker/producer of Meltdown Show, and co-host of Indoor kids) auctioned off all kinds of cool stuff to benefit the Los Angeles LGBT Center and their youth programs. Emily and Kumail are fans and supporters of the LA LGBT Center, which is the world's largest provider of programs and services for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people. In fact Emily volunteered at the Center when they moved to LA a few years ago, so they were excited and honored to help raise money for the organization.

It was a muggy afternoon at the record store and the charmingly engaging Emily and Kumail brought the crowds toward the stage with their endearing patter. The vibe was casually hilarious and conversational and Kumail was excellent at coaxing higher bids with a "So – you were happy to spend $50 but really, not $55?! $5 is just toooooo much?"

Emily deadpanned, "If you don't support gay rights, you should probably leave now."

The pair made us all feel proud to be Nerds in our own right. Other than a comic book store (or Comic Con) the record store is the biggest Nerd gathering place of all, and Saturday at Amoeba was its own Nerdfest! :)

There were seriously valuable prizes to score - as well as some silly items - and every bid was matched by Amoeba. Here are just a few highlights from the auction:

Recap: Andy Kindler Hosted a Charity Auction at Amoeba Hollywood to Benefit the LA LGBT Center

Andy Kindler Charity Auction at Amoeba Hollywood

On Saturday, June 6 we had ourselves a time at Amoeba Hollywood! With Pride weekend around the corner, this month's charity auction recipient was the Los Angeles LGBT Center. Our neighbors in Hollywood, the LA LGBT Center is the world’s largest provider of programs and services for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people. As with all our charity auctions, we matched all winning bids which doubled the money raised for the center's incredibly important youth programs.

We teamed up with the awesome folks at NerdMelt for this auction and guest host Andy Kindler made us laugh out loud while keeping the bids on fire. Andy Kindler is known in comedy circles as a troublemaker. Originally from New York, and now complaining from California, he annoys people all over the world. Andy has been a frequent guest and correspondent for The Late Show with David Letterman. Each summer at the Just For Laughs Festival in Montreal he delivers the State of the Industry address to a packed ballroom filled with comics and Hollywood industry types. Andy currently recurs on Comedy Central’s Tosh.0, IFC’s Maron and FOX’s hit animation series, Bob’s Burgers. Andy is spot on hilarious and he drove the bids up while keeping the audience and shoppers in stitches. There were outright guffaws and, much to his chagrin, he didn't annoy anybody! Good times. Good fun.

Here are some of the highlights of the items scored by our faithful Amoeba Auction-goers:

  • From the generous donation in honor of Theresia and Dale Cunningham: Box seats for John Fogerty at the Hollywood Bowl + a parking pass - $160.00!!
  • Tickets to see The Roots at Club Nokia - $40.00
  • Tickets to see Best Coast at Wiltern - $25.00
  • Tickets to see Bill Graham exhibit at Skirball center and other goodies - $15.00
  • NerdMelt Membership: free admission to all NerdMelt events for one month - $60.00
  • Converse gift pack: one-of-a kind Amoeba high tops - $ 20.00
  • Umami Burger gift card plus Lord of the Rings Goblets - $35.00
  • Urban Outfitters gift card + Lord of the Rings glass goblets- $35.00
  • Trader Joe's gift card PLUS a Lonely Island lunchbox - $50.00
  • Amoeba in-store VIP pass - $60.00
  • Pulp Fiction screenplay book signed by John Travolta + collector’s edition DVD - $35.00
  • An extremeley rare Elvis Presely 10-inch of the 1953 recording "My Happiness" and "That's When Your Heartaches Begin" from Jack White’s Third Man Records - $40
  • Crazy 45 Record label mirror - $10

All together the bids totaled $585.00 which means we're sending $1,170.00 directly to LA's LGBT Center for much needed services. A huge thank-you to our "auction regulars" who come in each time and support our auction. You guys are great, and we so appreciate your unending support for our community work.
