Kristen Schaal & Kurt Braunohler

We were psyched to have comedians Kristen Schaal and Kurt Braunohler host our charity auction for the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank at Amoeba Hollywood back in December. Schaal and Braunohler saved some time to do a little shopping and picked up music, stand-up, movies, and baby clothes, including a prison-striped Johnny Cash "Folsom Prison Blues" onesie. "Then it looks like the baby's in prison," says Braunohler, "and that's always fun."

Hot Tub with Kurt and Kristen Live at the VirgilKurt Braunohler and Kristen Schaal are the hosts of Hot Tub with Kurt & Kristen, a weekly variety show originally based in New York City and now taking place at The Virgil in Los Angeles. The duo also co-created the online series Penelope: Princess of Pets. In November, Kill Rock Stars released their comedy album, Hot Tub with Kurt and Kristen Live at the Virgil, on double vinyl.

Braunohler has performed at some of the most well-regarded comedy showcases and entertainment festivals in the world, including Montreal's Just for Laughs festival, the New York Comedy Festival, Edinburgh Fringe, SXSW, Bonnaroo, All Tomorrow's Parties, HBO US Comedy Arts Festival, and the Chicago Improv Festival. He has appeared on Bob's Burgers, Chelsea Lately, and John Oliver Presents. He currently hosts the podcast The K Ohle with Kurt Braunohler for the Nerdist network and just launched a new audio series available on Audible with his wife, Lauren Cook, called Wedlock.

Kurt Braunohler and Kristen Schaal

On Saturday, December 3rd we had the inimitable Kurt Braunohler and Kristen Schaal tackle the gavel duties at Amoeba Hollywood's famous charity auction. Kurt has been here many times before and helped us raise tons of money for great and worthy causes, but this was Kristen's first soiree into the fun and unpredictable realm of anxious anticipation and frenzied bidding. It didn't take long for her mad skills and silver-tongued auctioneering to come right on out.

Los Angeles Regional Food Bank

Kurt and Kristen brilliantly and hilariously paved the way for one of our most successful auctions ever! They auctioned off a crazy array of concert tickets, collectibles, gift certificates from our amazing neighbors and partners, and other things you never knew you had to have (a giant 25 foot Adele banner anyone??).

All proceeds from this month's auction benefited the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank, which feeds more than half a million people each month—12% of those are over the age of 65, and 25% are kids under 18. It is an amazing organization that we have had the honor of working with for the past few years. These are two of the funniest people on the planet and they rocked the crowd on Saturday!

Hot Tub with Kurt and Kristen live at the VirgilKristen, who has appeared in Flight of the Conchords and is currently the voice of Louise Belcher on Bob's Burgers, graciously signed some DVDs and a FUNKO doll of her character--which then garnered big money at the auction. Kurt and Kristen were celebrating their new double LP from Kill Rock Stars, Hot Tub with Kurt and Kristen Live at the Virgil. Recorded live over two nights at The Virgil in Los Angeles at their long-running comedy variety show Hot Tub with Kurt and Kristen.

Charity Auction Recap

On Saturday, April 4th we welcomed back comedian, raconteur and jet-ski marathoner Kurt Braunohler as our guest auctioneer! All proceeds from our April auction went to fund the Kids Ride and Activities at the Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition River Ride happening Sunday, June 28th at the Autry Center in Griffith Park.

Los Angeles River RideThe LA County Bicycle Coalition is an amazing organization that helps promote bike culture in Los Angeles, as well as engaging in a wide variety of policy, advocacy, education, and community building work to make the streets of Los Angeles County more bike friendly for all types of cyclists.

This was the third charity auction our friend Kurt Braunohler has hosted for us. If you're not familiar with Kurt, check out his Comedy Central web series Roustabout which follows his epic 7-day charity mission riding a jet ski from Chicago to New Orleans to raise money to send 500 goats and 1,000 chickens to Africa (via Heifer International), and spread as much joy and absurdity as possible along the way.

His debut comedy album How Do I Land? made AV Club, Paste Magazine, Village Voice, and Time Out New York's Best Of lists. His popular podcast The K Ohle airs weekly on the Nerdist Network. And you can find Kurt every Monday night at The Virgil in LA where he co-hosts the live comedy variety show Hot Tub with his comedy partner Kristen Schaal

Kurt Braunohler Amoeba AuctionOn Saturday, September 7 we had the amazing and suave Kurt Braunohler return to host our auction at Amoeba Hollywood and sign copies of his new comedy album, How Do I Land? – out on Kill Rock Stars.

Don't tell me you don't know about comedian Kurt Braunholer?? New "What's In My Bag?" Episode & Charity Auction with Comedian Kurt Braunohler

Kurt B

Who starts a Kickstarter campaign to raise money to tell a joke? The super hilarious Kurt Braunohler does! Braunohler asked fans and supporters to help him raise $4,000 so he could skywrite the sentence, "How do I land?" above Los Angeles.  What a genius way to have people be in on the joke! Not only did he rasie over 4k, but the video of the plane skywriting the message went viral. The real genius might be the fact that Braunohler's debut comedy album is titled, How Do I Land? and the cover is a photo of the skywriting joke. Who needs a publicity campaign with a stunt like that? Kudos to Kurt for finding a way to market an album while simultaneously having fans help him tell an awesome joke!

Join us at Amoeba Hollywood on Saturday, September 7th for our monthly charity auction hosted by Kurt Braunohler. This is one big special day! Not only will Kurt be hosting and celebrating his debut comedy album, but prcoeeds from the auction will benefit Free Arts For Abused Children - a volunteer organization that has brought arts programs to abused, neglected and homeless children for 30 years. But that's not all, to help commemorate what would have been singer/songwriter Elliott Smith's 44th birthday, Amoeba will be donating a portion of the proceeds from sales of any of Elliott Smith’s catalog (including digital) to Free Arts for Abused Children for the month of August. So, come out for a great cause, funny jokes and lots of good music!Elliot Smith benefit at Amoeba
