NxWorriesBy doubleay

Together, Anderson Paak and Knxwledge are NxWorries. Singer Anderson Paak and producer Knxwledge deliver one of Stones Throw Records’s final releases to close out 2015 and it may be what we’ve been waiting for all year. Their EP Link Up & Suede is a must hear.

Anderson Paak and Knwxledge are artists that ought to be on your radar in 2016. Both had big years in 2015; Anderson Paak, a soul singer out of Oxnard, California, was featured on four of the 16 tracks on Dr. Dre’s newest album, Compton, and Stones Throw producer Knwxledge landed production on Kendrick Lamar’s 2015 album, To Pimp A Butterfly. Individually, both artists are pounding out music; Paak is constantly giving us new content on his SoundCloud while Knxwledge has released over 60 projects on his Bandcamp in the past five years. All of their material has been noteworthy, but the two of them coming together for Link Up & Suede has to be some of their best work yet.

Knxwledge Discusses Stones Throw LP "Hud Dreems," Amoeba Crate Digging, His Church Upbringing, & Kendrick Lamar Production

Knxwledge (pronounced Knowledge) is known for such things as being a producer for Kendrick Lamar's current hit album To Pimp a Butterfly (for the track "Momma"); a regular contributor at the Low End Theory events; and, most importantly, as an incredibly prolific producer whose impressive catalog includes a long list of self-released cassettes, albums, and EPs for such labels as All City and Stones Throw. His latest album, Hud Dreems (pre-order on vinyl) was just released on Stones Throw.

The talented 26-year-old LA-based producer is a major fan of Amoeba Music and spends a lot of his spare time digging in the crates of Amoeba Hollywood for records with obscure sounds to sample. Naturally then the NJ born-and-raised producer was quite at home when he got invited to DJ a set at Amoeba Hollywood last month during Record Store Day celebrations at the Sunset Blvd. store. Around that same time I caught up with the producer to talk about making music, his new Stones Throw release, and of course crate digging at Amoeba - something he was more than happy to chat about.

Weekly Roundup: Thee Oh Sees, HEALTH, KNXWLEDGE, Crocodiles, Camera Shy

Thee Oh Sees – “Withered Hand”

thee oh sees mutilator defeated at last lpThis is exactly what we needed this week—some brain pummeling riffs from John Dwyer and Thee Oh Sees. It’s the second track (after “Web”) that they’ve premiered from Mutilator Defeated at Last (out May 18 on Castle Face) and it’s just one of the most exciting songs they’ve ever put out, an all-guns-firing guitar assault with a gorgeous solo. Listen via Pitchfork. Just in case you thought he ever slept, Dwyer also is releasing another electro-rock solo album under the Damaged Bug moniker called Cold Hot Plumbs, due June 1 on Castle Face.

HEALTH – “New Coke” video

health death magic lpRemember when coke was the devil, and every time someone took it on TV or in movies they died or something awful happened to them? Glad we’ve progressed beyond that—aside from the whole slow-motion projectile vomiting thing in this new HEALTH video. Right, there is a lot of post-party barfing in the video below, so beware. The booming electro-noise-pop track comes from the L.A. band’s just-announced new album, DEATH MAGIC, due Aug. 7 on Loma Vista.

Record Store Day 2015 Celebrations Take Over Amoeba Hollywood

Amoeba Hollywood record store day

Amoeba Hollywood’s Record Store Day festivities continued on into this afternoon with awesome DJ sets, delicious food and RSD-themed activities. Read about the morning and watch our interview with the early bird collectors in line here. At noon, our friends from Family Industries started silk-screening special RSD 2015 designs onto tote bags and t-shirts, with the proceeds benefiting the Silverlake Conservatory of Music. Starting at 1pm, some of our favorite Los Angeles-based musical artists got behind the turntables to provide the soundtrack for the day. Things kicked off with dream-pop duo Puro Instinct, who took to the decks to play a set of their favorite tunes in advance of their upcoming full-length release. Next up was Knxwledge (or KNX), a beatmaker whose Stones Throw debut drops on May 5. Across the street at Space15Twenty, a special TV on the Radio RSD Art Party kicked off, with guitar player Dave Sitek DJing while vocalist Tunde Adebimpe and Seeds artist Julian Gross drew caricatures. Also at Space15Twenty, Org Music and Shinola provided free Pabst Blue Ribbon, previews of RSD-exclusive titles and a rousing set from Mike Watt + the Secondmen and EvKain.
