The Voidz - What's In My Bag? - Amoeba Music

The Voidz visited Amoeba Hollywood recently for an album signing and we had the chance to sit down with the group and check out some of the cool stuff they found at the shop. "The thing is I never knew how to shop at a record store," admitted frontman Julian Casablancas, stating that most of his music has come from his friends' recommendations. Something that did catch his eye was a vintage plaque featuring an image of David Bowie decked in all white, playing saxaphone. "It just has a crazy vibe," he told us. "It's almost like you'd see it in some weird fast food little restaurant; you know where they have weird, random celebrities autographed." It wasn't all vintage emphermera though, as Casablancas and the rest of the band found an eclectic collection of records and posters.

The Voidz (fka Julian Casablancas+The Voidz) are an indie/dance punk band founded by The Strokes vocalist Casablancas. Members Jeff Kite (keyboards) and Alex Carapetis (percussion) had previously The Voidz - Virtue - Amoeba Musicworked with Casablancas as part of Sick Six, the backing band for this first solo LP, Phrazes for the Young. Kite and Carapetis had worked with Jake Bercovici (bass, synth) on "I Like the Night," a track Casablancas recorded as part of an ad campaign for French fashion line Azzaro. With the addition of guitarists Jeramy "Beardo" Gritter and Amir Yaghmai, the lineup was complete.

HAIM What's In My Bag? Amoeba Music

HAIM recently visited Amoeba Hollywood for a special album release event and made time for some record shopping while they were here. In this What's In My Bag? episode, the bandmates and sisters give us a peek into some of the music and movies from their childhood, including Donna Summer's Love To Love You Baby, which guitarist/keyboardist Alana explains was often played when they were washing dishes. "I have great memories of drying," she said, adding that she was never a washer. "It's a great drying tempo."

Los Angeles pop rock band HAIM features Este Haim (bass), Alana Haim (guitars/keyboards), and Danielle Haim (lead vocals/guitar). The sisters began their musical careers early, backing their HAIM Something To Tell Youparents Moti and Donna in a family cover band called Rockinhaim. Este and Danielle performed together in pop band Valli Girls in the mid-'00s, releasing tracks on soundtrack and comp albums before Danielle departed to tour as a guitarist with Jenny Lewis and Julian Casablancas. In 2012, the women formed HAIM, releasing the Forever EP and attracting attention through a series of buzzed about appearances at SXSW which led to a deal with Polydor and a management contract with Jay-Z's Roc Nation.

25 Cassette Store Day Releases

The second annual Cassette Store Day is coming this Saturday Sept. 27! We’ll have just-released cassettes at the front sampler section at Amoeba Hollywood and in front at Berkeley and S.F. Plus, 15% off all used cassettes at Amoeba SF only. Here are some releases to look for …

1349 Massive Cauldron of Chaos

An early release by black metal greats 1349! Personally, I think the lo-fi aesthetic of Black Metal sounds amazing on cassette. The LP and CD come out Sept. 30 on Seasons of Mist.

The Adolescents - The Complete Demos 1980-1986

Consisting mostly of tracks recorded in 1980, The Complete Demos is kind of like the punk band’s unofficial first album.

Alvvays Alvvays; Fear of Men Loom

Fear of Men and Alvvays are great female-fronted indie-rock bands reminiscent of The Cranberries and The Sundays; two personal favorites from this year.

21 Records for Fall

Aphex TwinSyro

aphex twin syro lp
Out Sept. 23

The Internet pretty much exploded when Richard D. James announced Syro, and with good reason. It’s the ambient/electronic artist’s first album in 13 years, and from the sound of the glorious “minipops 67 [120.2][source field mix]” (OMG vocals), it’ll have been worth the wait.

Pre-order Syro LP & CD.

Julian Casablancas + The Voids Tyranny
