10 Limited Edition Record Store Day Soundtracks

Record Store Day is so close, you can almost taste all the limited edition special releases! On Saturday, April 22, 2017, indie music stores everywhere will join forces and unleash this year’s rare and drool-worthy RSD releases. (Download a PDF of those exclusive releases HERE.) It’s our Xmas and we are going to town, no Santa needed!

The vinyl soundtrack selection is especially plentiful and exciting this year, full of scores and collections that are being released for the first time ever, first time on vinyl, or are re-releases of out-of-print albums. Film fans will flip for the fabulous colored vinyl, deluxe additions and packaging, and - in a couple of cases - beautiful picture discs.

Here's my 10 favorite from those being offered:

Ciao! Manhattan soundtrackCiao! Manhattan

Part of Andy Warhol's Factory in the mid-'60s, Edie Sedgwick was “It Girl” of the Pop Art age. 1973's Ciao! Manhattan was the model and actor's final film. Written and directed by John Palmer and David Weisman, the movie tells a somewhat fictionalized account of Sedgewick's life. She portrays Susan Superstar, a New Yorker who ends up living in a drained swimming pool in Santa Barbara, always in a narcotic daze. The film was shot over a five-year period, at the end of which Sedgwick died of a barbiturate overdose at the age of 28.

Star Wars Record Store Day Turntable

Not too far in the future, in a galaxy not so far, far away, our stores will have two limited edition Star Wars collectibles for fans to pick up on Saturday, April 22nd for Record Store Day. In honor of Record Store Day's tenth birthday and the fortieth anniversary of Star Wars: A New Hope, Crosley Radio has created a very cool Star Wars Cruiser turntable, complete with pitch control, dynamic full-range stereo speakers, a headphone jack, RCA outputs, and Bluetooth capability. This is Crosley's fourth time creating an exclusive RSD design.

Please note: we'll be holding a special 20% off turntables sale on Record Store Day, but the Star Wars Crosley will not be included in the sale. Like all RSD exclusives, there will be no holds or phone orders and it's a limit of 1 per customer.

John Williams Star Wars A New Hope Record Store DayNaturally, the perfect way to christen this new interstellar turntable is to throw on a limited edition RSD exclusive 10" featuring classic tracks from John Williams' epic score and turn it up Darth-Vader-making-an entrance-loud. Limited to 4,000 copies, the 10" includes the Star Wars: A New Hope "Main Title Theme" on Side A and "The Throne Room" and "End Title" on Side B.

The Top 10 Soundtracks of All Time

by Gabriel Wheeler

There are hundreds of excellent soundtracks that could easily fit into many Top Ten lists. This is my attempt to grab ten of the best. Caveat Emptor!

10. Reservoir Dogs (1992)

The songs on the Reservoir Dogs soundtrack truly create the atmosphere and character development for the film. Brilliant.

Guardians of the Galaxy Awesome Mix Tape
9. Guardians of the Galaxy Awesome Mix Tape Vol. 1 (2014)

Easily could be Reservoir Dogs Vol. 2, but the music is used so well that it transcends that critique. The mix tape is so essentially Star-Lord that is defines his motivations in the movie.

Boogie Nights
8. Boogie Nights Vol. 1 (1997)

Top 20 soundtracks of 2016

There were lots of soundtrack releases to choose from this year, with many limited edition color vinyl versions creating excitement and selling out fast. Soundtracks play an incredibly important role in films by directors Quentin Tarantino, David Lynch, and Nicolas Winding Refn, so it's no surprise that they each had two soundtracks appear on this list. Music from Star Wars films, new and old, made it on this list as well. Read on to see what made each soundtrack release so special.

Suicide Squad the Album

20. Various Artists - Suicide Squad: The Album

Although the movie was not incredibly well-received by critics, the soundtrack - which features Skrillex, Twenty One Pilots, G-Eazy, Panic! at the Disco, Eminem & more - landed it into our top sellers of the year.

Released on CD and LP.

Behind the Scenes: Dave Gahan, Rich Machin and Serj Tankian

Amoeba Hollywood was buzzing with some recent "What's In My Bag?" guests.

Serj Tankian HarakiriFirst, we had Serj Tankian, solo artist and frontman for System of a Down. He was particuarly interested in film music, including composers Ennio Morricone and John Williams. His choices were mostly from the jazz room, although he did select a Sigur Ros album and Mondo Cane by his friend Mike Patton. Serj actually came in that day inquiring about the experimental section which is now located in the jazz room, so technically Mondo Cane is also a jazz room pick. As for the rest of his picks and what he said about each one, you'll have to wait for the video!

Serj just announced a North American tour in support of his new solo album, Harakiri. You can see him live in Los Angeles September 28 at Club Nokia.
