Hip-Hop Rap Up [New York City Version] ISP in NYC, Jeff Chang in BK, MURS is King of New York, Kanye West Cuts NY Show Short

Fresh from doing a showcase headlining set at the big 2016 DMC World DJ Championship Finals in London a week ago (where, as pictured, Tony Prince awarded Qbert as a DMC Legend), the Invisibl Skratch Piklz (ISP) are in New York currently where they were at the Maker Faire NYC in Queens over the weekend and later today (Monday October 3rd) headline the Highline Ballroom. At tonight's 8pm (door 7pm) show at the Chelsea district venue the ISP will perform their new album The 13th Floor (avail on vinyl in Amoeba stores): similarly to how they did at their recent in-store at Amoeba Berkeley and at other concerts on their ongoing globe trotting turntable tour. Tonight's show in New York City by the Bay Area's premiere turntablist ambassadors, featuring D-Styles, Shortkut, and Qbert, will be an extra special one since the opening act will be none other than the X-Ecutioners.

Formerly known as the X-Men, with whom the Piklz famously battled it out back in 1996, the X-Ecutioners feature Rob Swift, DJ Precision, Boogie Blind, and Mista Sinista. Perhaps tonight they will do a recreation of that legendary crew battle from 20 years ago, or maybe a dedication to the late great "grandmaster" Roc Raida of the famed NYC DJ crew. However confirmed for tonight is an exhibition battle between Killa-Jewel (Canadian Thre3Style Finalist) and DJ Perly (2016 NYC DMC champ and 2016 DMC US Finals runner up). Tonight's must-see show, which will be hosted by Statik Selektah, will also feature an all 45's set by DJ Shortkut, Tix and more info

As widely publicized, at another NYC concert last night, Kanye West cut short his set abruptly during the Meadows Music and Arts Festival during which time he told a loudly disappointed audience that, "I'm sorry, family emergency....I have to stop the show!" This announcement came upon him hearing that his reality star wife, Kim Kardashian, had reportedly been robbed at gunpoint in Paris. France. No word so far as to whether West, whose most recent album releases include this year's The Life of Pablo and 2013's Yeejus, will return to finish that shortened concert set.

Historic Event For A City That Once Banned Rap, Oakland's Hiero Day 2016 Elevated It To Best Damn Hip-Hop Festival Ever

Posted by Billyjam, September 7, 2016 07:07am | Post a Comment

Oakland's annual all day hip-hop festival, Hiero Day 2016 that took place two days ago, was both amazing and historic. Only in its fifth year, the Hieroglyphics collective curated event has not only already established itself as the best annual music and cultural festival in The Town (Oakland). But this annual Labor Day's sold-out, talent-packed, festival comprised of three different concert stages, each offering top notch and totally diverse hip-hop acts, elevated Hiero Day into the best damn hip-hop festival anywhere! Attended by respectful hip-hop fans of all generations and races, but each sharing an appreciation for all styles of hip-hop, Hiero Day 2016 exuded the most positive, peaceful, uplifting vibe of any hip-hop event of its scale that I have ever witnessed anywhere. And that prevailing positive vibe that permeated the air on Monday all seemed to fuel  the energy of the acts on stage and their tight sets. Monday's diverse list of over 50 performers included Too $hort, Paris, the Invisibl Skratch Piklz, Dilated Peoples, Murs, Mr. Lif, Just Blaze, Young L, and the Hieros themselves..

Hiero Day 2016 Video Preview

Posted by Billyjam, September 5, 2016 01:04pm | Post a Comment

Already underway with things started, there's still time for Bay Area hip-hop fans to head on over to the fifth, latest, and best ever Hiero Day 2016 in Oakland. Previous years have been really good but this one, with all the wonderful diver acts on the bill, looks like it beats all previous years. It's an all ages event and is great for kids too since it has such an incredibly peaceful and positive vibe. Most things run close to their schedules but sometimes, like last year, things can run a bit late, especially later in the day. So be patient realistic and don't take the above schedule literally but rather as good guideline to the running order of acts and their set running lengths. In honor of this unique and wonderful cultural event that the hometown Hieroglyphics hip-hop crew (who headline) produce and present, below are a series of corresponding music videos for several of the acts to hit the three concert stages (Full Circle, Third Eye, and Infinity) later today including Dilated Peoples, Murs, Too $hort, The Beat Junkies, The Grouch, Nef The Pharaoh, Juvenile, Lyrics Born, Invisibl Skratch Piklz and Young L. Note that pre-sale tix are no longer available but you can buy tix at the gate. More info on Hiero Day 2016

This is a good week for Bay Area fans of hip-hop DJs with lots of must attend turntablist events in the week ahead in the San Francisco Bay Area. These include the return of legendary SF 90s DJ club Deco, DJ Quest (pictured left @ Amoeba) curating a stage at next weekend's Carnival on day two May 29th, and Maryland DJ ALF flying out to SF for various events including the monthly Skratchpad and teaming up with Mista B and others including the aforementioned Quest and Six Kutter and DJ Zobe at DJ 2Fresh's new spot Gallery 1317 for session and screening of Positive Omen (see flyer below for info). Additionally in Bay DJ news long time Bay Area True Justice releasing an album on Paris' label, and the return of the mighty ISP.

The much heralded recent return of the Invisibl Skratch Piklz (ISP) has been taking full effect this weekend with the pioneering Bay Area turntablist crew's reunited members representing at the the Maker Faire in San Mateo. The official reunited ISP lineup, who recorded the new 2016 ISP album The 13th Floor, is the trio of DJ Qbert, Shortkut, and D-Styles who are pictured above this afternoon along with former ISP member Yogafrog who handles more of the business and management areas these days. In fact it is Yogafrog who, along with Qbert and others at their  Thud Rumble company, that masterminded the turntablism meets high-tech collaboration with Intel that landed them a spot at the Maker Faire a year ago exactly.

Hardworking, Humble DJ Shortkut Is Finally Ready for His Solo Debut LP + Discusses New Skratch Piklz Album and Career Highlights

Hardworking, humble, & hella talented DJ Shortkut @ 45 Sessions New Parish JZLim Photography

"If I was to end all this tomorrow and I had an album, then I would be happy," DJ Shortkut confided when I caught up with the hardworking, highly respected, and diversely talented San Francisco DJ in his hometown this week. Feeling "exhausted" but with a wide smile on his face, the heavy in-demand globe-trotting DJ, who is booked on average 4 to 5 nights a week, was just back home in the States from Asia where he's been spending a lot of time in recent months including at Red Bull Thre3Style events with the recently reunited Invisibl Skratch Piklz (ISP), along with Qbert and D-Styles, with whom he recorded the anticipated album The 13th Floor. Despite the fact that he was honored with the Grand Wizard Theodore Lifetime Achievement Award for his contributions to the development of scratching & DJ culture, and that he holds membership of three of the most revered turntablist ensembles in the history of the genre - ISP, The Beat Junkies, and Triple Threat DJs (with Vinroc and Apollo) - and has recorded with each of them, plus released a stack of his own amazing solo DJ mixes encompassing hip-hop and dancehall and other styles, he has never released a DJ Shortkut album. But that is all about to change the Daly City DJ born Jonathan Cruz told me this week following an impressive turntable set he threw down at Guitar Center on Van Ness celebrating the launch of Thud Rumble and DJ Qbert's TRX Scratch Mixer.
