The Buttertones Live at Amoeba Music

Amoeba Hollywood was excited to have local garage rockers The Buttertones live on stage performing songs from their latest record, Gravedigging, which is out now on Innovative Leisure. The quintet drew a rapt crowd as they tore through their surf and psychobilly influenced tunes.

The Buttertones GravediggingFirst up was "Pistol Whip," a mid-tempo, night-stalker of a song showcasing vocalist/guitarist Richard Araiza's David Byrne/Bryan Ferry-like vocals. Next was the manic "Sadie's A Sadist," featuring a Cramps-y guitar groove and some killer saxophone trills. "A Tear For Rosie," a dark ballad with staccato guitar and organ hits followed third, and ending the set was the titular track, "Gravediggin'" which begins with a chaotic muted "Peter Gunn" by way of "The Twilight Zone" guitar riff which suddenly drops down to a subdued groove with chilling, falsetto-accented vocals, before spinning back into the riff-y vortex.

Allah-Lahs - What's In My Bag? Amoeba Music

We recently had the pleasure of having modern garage rock band (and former Amoebites) Allah-Lahs here at Amoeba Hollywood. That's right, not only are they one of the coolest bands around town, but three of the four members are Amoeba alums! When asked what record he was always looking for while working at the store, drummer Matthew Correia answered, "I was always imagining the day when I was gonna find some original Spacemen 3 records." That day never came, but the guys did find some other great albums on their latest visit.

Allah-Lahs Calico Amoeba MusicAllah-Las consisit of vocalist/guitarist Miles Michaud, guitarist/vocalist Pedrum Siadatian, bassist/vocalist Spencer Dunham, and drummer/vocalist Matthew Correia. In 2011 the quartet released their first 7", "Catamaran/Long Journey," featuring production by old school soul-inspired singer and guitarist Nick Waterhouse. A year later, the band released their self-titled debut for Innovative Leisure, which was also produced by Waterhouse.

New "What's in My Bag?" Episode With Tijuana Panthers

Posted by Amoebite, June 23, 2015 02:10pm | Post a Comment

Despite flying under the mainstream radar for almost a decade, employing the DIY strategy so many do, the Tijuana Panthers are finally poised for a breakthrough. Much like their Innovative Leisure labelmates Hanni El Khatib, Nick Waterhouse, and the Allah-Las, the Tijuana Panthers have been crafting their own brand of alternative surf rock while tucked away in sunny Long Beach, California.

In 2010, the band self-released their debut, Max Baker, following it up with Semi Sweet (Innovative Leisure) in 2013. The latter is a lo-fi rock-pop record at times reminiscent of '50s era doo wop with puppy love themes. For their latest effort, Wayne Interest, the Panthers teamed up with producer and Black Keys touring bassist, Richard Swift. The lo-fi production style is still very intact and guitarist Chad Wachtel's surf licks rock with authenticity. The band shows off their punker minimalism, while still delivering catchy melodies backed by echoey drums.

Watch the Allah-Las Get Dreamy at Amoeba Hollywood

Allah Las

Backed by the LA based label, Innovative Leisure, the Allah-Las have managed to take their garage/surf-rock sound to an international audience. With tour dates across Europe, Asia, and Australia, the band is racking up frequent flyer miles and growing their fanbase the good ol' fashioned way: touring, touring, and more touring. The group's busy schedule brought them stateside for a special in-store performance at Amoeba Hollywood. Playing to a packed house of devotees of all ages, The Allah-Las brought with them some extra arsenal. On stage the band featured six musicians total, including a percussionist, a keyboard player, and a slide guitar player. The result was a nice warm wall of sound that would make Arthur Lee proud. The Allah-Las are no strangers to Amoeba Hollywood. In fact, Pedrum Siadatian (lead guitar), Matt Correia (drums), and Spencer Dunham (bass) were all employees during the early days of the band back in 2008!

The former Amoebites teamed up with producer and labelmate Nick Waterhouse to deliver their signature Southerrn Cali, lo-fi, surfer sonics on their sophomore effort, Worship The Sun (Innovative Leisure). The band has grown as performers and songwriters since their 2012 self-titled debut and the result is a much more mature sound on Worship the Sun.
