New "What's In My Bag?" Episode with Eagles of Death Metal

Eagles of Death Metal What's In My Bag?

"The character of Catwoman was a big influence on my developing sexuality," confides Eagles of Death Metal frontman Jesse Hughes during his recent visit to Amoeba Hollywood. Hughes, also known as Boots Electric, starts our "What's In My Bag?" episode showing off a figurine of the aforementioned Catwoman from the classic '60s TV show and movie, Batman. "That's what I love about Amoeba," he continues. "You're able to really live within the eternal, time-frozen bubble of pop culture and experience it, if you wish to, in almost any generation." Hughes was full of humorous and insightful observations throughout our interview and proved to have quite the eclectic, and electric, tastes.

Eagles of Death Metal was formed in 1998 by longtime friends Josh Homme and Jesse Hughes. The band's debut came courtesy of Homme's The Desert Sessions Volume 3 & 4 later that year. With the increasing success of Queens of the Stone Age, Eagles of Death Metal was sidelined for a time before the release of their 2004 debut Peace, Love, Death Metal. A number of songs from the album were used in commercial, video game, and film projects, causing the band's profile to grow rapidly. The band released a followup, Death by Sexy, in 2006. They embarked on a series of tours in support of the album, headlining their own tour and supporting The Strokes, Peaches, Joan Jett, and for one show, Guns 'N Roses.

Recap: Charity Auction for Planned Parenthood with Tawny Newsome

Amoeba Charity Auction for Planned Parenthood with Tawny Newsome

We sure had a great time at Amoeba Hollywood on Saturday! Our special guest auctioneer Tawny Newsome, musician and comedian and all around wonderful person, graced our stage and helped us raise close to $2,000 for our local Planned Parenthood chapter.

We had some outstanding prizes, and Tawny's relaxed style coaxed the audience into raising their auction paddles (which were actually Amoeba handheld fans, so they did double duty that hot day). Full of quips and one-liners, she had the audience chuckling--and she even got the shy people to join in!

Tawny Newsome is a Second City alum, actor (Bajillion Dollar Propertie$' "Chelsea Leight-Leigh") and a singer/guitarist. She was a touring member of Second City before joining the Mainstage cast and released a solo album in 2012. In 2013 Rolling Stone suggested Tawny for SNL's new cast. She moved from Chicago to LA about a year and a half ago where she's kept very busy. This October, Tawny is releasing her 4th album with Jon Langford (Mekons, Waco Brothers) which they recorded at the legendary Muscle Shoals studio with original Muscle Shoals session players. They recorded the new album three days after last year's election with Tawny, John and their two band-mates flying to the town of 400. Four Lost Souls will be out on Bloodshot records September 22, with a tour starting that same month.

New "What's In My Bag?" Episode With The Budos Band

The Budos Band at Amoeba Hollywood

The Budos Band is a New York-based instrumental ensemble rooted in Afro-beat, soul jazz and funk music. After forming at a jam session hosted by Antibalas, the group released their self-titled debut on Daptone Records in 2005. Two years later, they followed this release up with The Budos Band II, a lengthy promotional tour, and a hiatus during which the many members contributed to other projects. In 2010, the band reunited once more for their third effort, aptly titled The Budos Band III.

2014 marked a slight shift in direction for the band, when their new album, Burnt Offering, saw the group dabbling in psychedelia and vintage soundtrack music while still staying true to their Afro-beat and funk foundations. The Budos Band will be appearing at several North America summer festivals this year, such as Sasquatch and Desert Daze.
