Honoring Legacies of Nokie Edwards, Charlie Quintana, Craig Mack, Stephen Hawking, Matt Dike, Patrick Doyle + Others Gone in 2018

“We’re losing too many artists too young like Pam the Funkstress and DJ Stef, and now Craig Mack,” Shing02 told the Amoeblog Wednesday night in New York City. The multi-talented Japanese artist with Bay Area roots was speaking after last night's sold-out Brooklyn concert with his live hip-hop band (including Spin Master DJ A-1) at Rough Trade where surprise guest emcee, Bay Area transplant Kirby Dominant, came onstage for an inspired impromptu rendition of Craig Mack’s rap hit “Flava In Ya Ear.” [see photo above c/o Yoshiaki Miura + left c/o Peter Agoston

Hours earlier in the same day the audience learned the sad news of the passing of the 47 year old Long Island NY native who had died two days previously in South Carolina from “natural causes.”  With a recording career dating back to 1988, when he was MC EZ, it wasn't until 1994 that Craig Mack made his indelible mark on hip-hop history. This he did as the breakout star on Sean (Puffy/Diddy) Comb’s then fledgling Bad Boy Entertainment label with the hit  ”Flava in Ya Ear" and its remix (scroll down for video) featuring LL Cool J, Busta Rhymes and a young little known Brooklyn rapper named Christopher Wallace known as Biggie Smalls and The Notorious B.I.G. (RIP).

David Bowie 2018 Top Six [Includes Upcoming Bowie Vinyl/LP Remastered Reissues]

Posted by Billyjam, February 13, 2018 03:02pm | Post a Comment

David Bowie Low LP Feb 23 2018 reissue/ pre-order   (Parlophone)

David Bowie may be physically gone from this earth since January 10th, 2016 when the sad news of the iconic artist’s sudden death from cancer shocked the world. But in the 25 months since his passing (exactly 2 days following his 69th birthday & the release of his 25th album Blackstar - also on 180 gram vinyl/LP) David Bowie, as an omnipresent artist in popular culture, appears to be as alive (if not more so) than anytime in the multihyphenate artist's illustrious, ever-changing, five-decade career; with 2018 already shaping up to be The Year of Bowie. Hence the following David Bowie 2018 Top Six list.

#6: As the David Bowie Official Twitter account, in conjunction with the image above, tweeted last week:
History has been made with the very emotional launch of @elonmusk’s midnight cherry Tesla Roadster car into space, with David Bowie’s Life on Mars as the soundtrack, and a chap called Starman in the driving seat” in reporting the SpaceX’s Falcon Heavy rocket launch that cost SpaceX CEO Elon Musk $90million. Included in that price tag was the cost of the attached $100,000 Tesla Roadster with its Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy "Don't Panic" dashboard sign and the car sound system reportedly playing Bowie’s “Space Oddity” on repeat mode for its long journey toward Mars’ orbit.

Amoeba Hollywood's top 50 sellers of 2017

Without a doubt, our customers love Kendrick Lamar and Mac DeMarco. They both had three albums appear on our list of the best-selling albums of 2017. Among the classic best-sellers like Michael Jackson's Thriller and Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon were debut albums from Khalid and SZA. New anniversary reissues were a hot ticket in 2017, with the 50th anniversary editions of Pet Sounds and Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band selling especially well.

Read on to see the full list of Amoeba Hollywood's Top 50 Sellers of 2017.

Khalid American Teen

50. Khalid - American Teen (Released March 2017)

Singer/songwriter Khalid's debut album features the hit single "Location," with its atmosphere of stoned partying, chill vibes, and romantic longing. Treading somewhere in the realm of neo-soul hip hop and unbridled sunshiny pop, American Teen rejects any notion of nihilism and bitterness to create an album that's pure happiness. Bay Area fans were treated to a very special acoustic performance by Khalid at Amoeba SF back when his album first dropped.

Top 20 Vinyl Reissues of 2017

A bumper crock of quality vinyl reissues rocked our world this past year. A steady stream of (sort of) new and improved LPs from heavy hitters kept our turntables spinning, as did a nice selection of cleaned up soon-to-be-classic releases from some of our recent favorites. The top sellers at our stores in 2017 were an intriguing mix of eternally cool masterpieces, revered releases by the dearly departed, and long out-of-print rarities available for the first time on vinyl. Read on for the good, the bad (in a cool way), and the super ultra expanded editions that made a splash at Amoeba over the past twelve months.

Thom Yorke - Tomorrow's Modern Boxes

20. Thom Yorke - Tomorrow's Modern Boxes [180-gram White Vinyl]

Back in September 2014, Radiohead's Thom Yorke released his second solo album as a bit torrent bundle. The record was summarily downloaded several hundred thousand times and is now on its third vinyl pressing. The album is a sonic manifestation of what trying a new avenue would sound like. Yorke sounds very playful in this ambient glitch atmosphere he has created. It is in that spirit of playfulness where the record shines. There is little expectation having been almost 10 years since his last solo outing and therefore there is no grave preciousness attached. Refreshing and flighty, Tomorrow’s Modern Boxes is a piece from Thom Yorke that questions ownership. His or otherwise.
