Empress Of - What's In My Bag?

Electro-singer/songwriter Empress Of recently stopped by Amoeba Hollywood, shopping for records and films by artists that have inspired her. The first thing she showed us when we sat down to talk with her was the Kate Bush LP box set, Remastered In Vinyl I. "I really just wanted to find The Kick Inside, 'cause that's my gateway drug into Kate Bush," she told us, "but this is bomb." "I like how in control of her art she is," she told us when asked why she liked Kate Bush's work, "it's a singular vision; like videos, dancing, music. Everything is the world of Kate Bush."

Empress Of is the stage name of singer, songwriter, and producer Lorely Rodriguez. The name was inspired by the Empress card in the tarot deck. Born and raised in Los Angeles, Empress Of first began attracting attention in 2011, when she anonymously released a series of short YouTube demos called "Colorminutes." Her debut single, "Champagne," was released by No Recordings in 2012. Two years later, she released a bilingual four-song EP called Systems.

In 2015, Empress Of released her debut full-length, Me. Self-produced and recorded in Mexico, the album addresses what she felt to be the negative aspects of living in Brooklyn at the time. Me charted in the top ten on the Billboard Heatseekers chart and placed on the Dance/Electronic Albums chart. Her followup, Us, was released in fall 2018. She has worked with DJDS and Khalid on their Billboard-charting "Why Don't You Come On" and on the DJDS Lana Del Rey cover "Love." She collaborated with Khalid on his Suncity release. Empress Of's 2018 Spanish-language double single "Trust Me Baby / In Dreams" premiered on Zane Lowe's Beats 1 radio show.

What's In My Bag? Myrkur Amoeba Music

When Danish black metal musician Myrkur needs dark musical inspiration, she seeks out an unexpected source: ABBA. That's right Amalie Bruun, the alter-ego of Myrkur, considers the Swedish pop group to be "the inventors of Scandinavian horror pop." We discussed the dark side of ABBA, along with the rest of her eclectic choices, in this What's In My Bag? episode with Myrkur at Amoeba Hollywood

Amalie Bruun combines the harsh, raw energy of black metal with ethereal, otherworldly vocals via her Myrkur project. She provided guitars, bass, vocals, and production skills to her 2014 self-titled debut EP; Bruun's friend Rex Myrnur played drums. Her first full-length, M, was released a year later, winning Myrkur MareridtMyrkur more critical acclaim and an introduction to a wider audience. The following year, she released a live album fittingly called Mausoleum -- it was recorded at the Emanuel Vigeland Mausoleum in Oslo, Norway.

2017's Mareridt was recorded in both Seattle and Copenhagen with the assistance of producer Randall Dunn (Earth, Marissa Nadler, Sunn O))), Boris). The album drew inspiration from Nordic fairy tales, Bible verses, and classic mythology and showcases Bruun's newly acquired mastery of the ancient Swedish cow herding call known as kulning, as well as a collaboration with fellow traveler Chelsea Wolfe. Myrkur is on tour throughout North America and Europe this spring and summer.

Best of 2017 Hip Hop

Black Moon - Enta da Stage

Black Moon - Enta da Stage: The Remixes

Dropping several weeks after Fat Beats reissued Black Moon’s 1993 hip-hop classic Enta Da Stage on vinyl (also as a 2LP set), was the Enta Da Stage: The Remixes LP set by the influential Brooklyn crew. Both vinyl releases are essential for any hip-hop library. The Remixes LP features remixes and alternate versions previously released in non-album format (incl. M.W. Smooth's mix of "Who Got Da Props?" and DJ Evil Dee's remix of "How Many MC's") as well as previously unheard material such as Buckshot's new vocal version of "Shit Iz Real.” - Billyjam, Hollywood

Most of us live in world where we can stream movies 24/7, but there are still quite a few of us who want physical copies of our favorite films, whether it’s for the artwork or the inclusion of extras like commentary, alternate cuts, behind-the-scenes photos, and more. Many amazing horror and exploitation movies found their way to Blu-ray this year, so without further ado here are my top 10 sleazy and scary Blu-rays for 2016.

Blood Father10. Blood Father (2016. Jean-Francois Richet. Lionsgate Films)

This is the only movie on the list that actually hit theaters in 2016. Mel Gibson plays John Link, an ex-biker on parole who runs a tattoo parlor out of his trailer in the desert. Out of the blue, his missing daughter gives him a call asking for money and so begins their high-octane journey full of mayhem. This is the ultimate dad film mixing elements of Breaking Bad and Mad Max. Also available on DVD.
