Hazel English: Wake Up! (CD & Vinyl)

Hazel English’s debut full-length album trades the hazy, reverb drenched production styles of her earlier work for a classic late '60s pop sound with timeless pop hooks and addictive melodies. A move from San Francisco to Los Angeles to collaborate with producer Justin Raisen (Sky Ferreira, Charli XCX, Angel Olsen) has brought a fine-tuned sense of pop craftsmanship to her music. Wake Up! casts a wry eye over modern life and promises to be one of the highlights of 2020.

We're all in the same boat right now and, although that boat feels like it's on fire and slowly sinking, we're going to be fine as long as we stay away from public gatherings, practice social distancing, and DON'T FREAK OUT. I'm not exactly an expert on not freaking out, but one surefire way I've learned to avoid panic, anxiety, and generalized freak-outs is the pleasure of escape into music, movies, books, and really any kind of art for that matter.

Luckily, the post offices are still making deliveries, and Amoeba.com is open for business with free shipping on music and movies to the U.S. New releases continue to appear in the world, like freshly sprung sprouts after a destructive storm (or something like that), and I'll be here with you throughout this insanity, letting you know about the neat new titles that you can have delivered to your door.

Here's some new Blu-ray & DVD releases that came out today, Tuesday, March 17th:

Celebrating The Misfits Reunion

Posted by Billyjam, May 12, 2016 11:23pm | Post a Comment

Certain band reunions are a big deal, a real big deal. The surprise return of legendary New Jersey punk band the Misfits with co-founder Glenn Danzig back in the lineup after 33 long years, is one of those big deal band reunions. Hence the excitement upon the announcement that this September the pioneering horror punk band will reunite to play the 2016 Riot Fest in both Chicago and Denver. 1983 was when the group's mainman Glenn Danzig, along with bassist Jerry Only and guitarist Doyle Wolfgang von Frankenstein all played together as the Misfits. Most of the iconic band's legions of diehard fans had given up hope that they ever would get together again in their original lineup. That assumption is totally understandable considering the seemingly iirreconcilable rift between Danzig and former bandmates, especially Only. After Danzig had moved on with Samhain and then band the group Danzig, he and Only were embroiled in drawn out legal battles and law suits that spanned many years, one as recently as just a couple of years ago.

One key legal battle that Only won was being granted the right to perform under the name the Misfits. This he and the band's ever changing lineup did for the past two decades. But, as any true blue Misfits fan will tell you,  it was not really the Misfits without Danzig. Note that a decade back Doyle had joined Danzig during a number of 2004 and 2005 concerts to perform half hour sets of early Misfits songs, something that most figured would be the closest they'd ever experience of a Misfits reunion show.  Hence the excitement among fans upon the announcement that the original Misfits will be back this September with Danzig, Only and Doyle together once again. So far the word is that the surprise reunion of the iconic punk outfit, upon the urging of festival organizers, will be those two Riot Fest dates only, both of which they'll headline. But there's always a change that they do additional shows or maybe even tour.  Regardless diehard fans of  the band are ecstatic with this news and planning trips to the two Riot Fest cities in the first half of September. More info on Riot Fest Denver (Sept 2/3/4) and Riot Fest Chicago (Sept 16/17/18). And below, in celebration of the upcoming Misfits reunion concerts, is a 1983 Misfits show in Boston, MA: the last year of the Misfits original line-up with Glenn Danzig.
