Tim Kasher What's In My Bag? Amoeba Music

Omaha, Nebraska indie-rocker Tim Kasher stopped by Amoeba Hollywood recently to grab some of the latest releases by a few of his current favorite bands. In this "What's In My Bag?" episode, the Cursive and The Good Life frontman shares with us some newer bands he's discovered and talks about a few he's been a fan of for years, like Spoon. Having toured with the Austin-bred band in their early days, Kasher and Spoon's Britt Daniel have been friends "for a really long time," and Kasher notes he hasn't "missed an album ever since they've been releasing albums."

Tim Kasher began his musical career in 1993 with the formation of Slowdown Virginia, a hugely influential group in the Omaha scene that would later birth Saddle Creek Records and a host of related bands. In the spring of 1995, Kasher formed Cursive with his former Slowdown Virginia Tim Kasher No Resolution Amoeba Musicbandmates Matt Maginn and Steve Pedersen with Clint Schnase on drums. The band's debut LP, Such Blinding Stars for Starving Eyes, came in 1997. Cursive's reputation grew with the release of Domestica (2000) and The Ugly Organ (2003). Their latest release is 2012's I Am Gemini.

New "What's in My Bag?" Episode with Car Seat Headrest

Car Seat Headrest Will Toledo Amoeba Music What's In My Bag?

"My twelve-year old self kinda' took over and I ended up just getting a bunch of colorful, bright albums," says Will Toledo, frontman of the Seattle-based Car Seat Headrest. "I don't even think I like this band, but I like the album cover," he says while holding up the Pet Shop Boys' latest album, Super. Toledo was record shopping at Amoeba Hollywood and we got a chance to sit down with him and check out his picks, not all of which were chosen by the cover.

Originally from Williamsburg, VA the indie band takes its name from Toledo's decision to record vocals in the back of his car for privacy. Self-releasing four albums in 2010, and steadily releasing more over the following years on Bandcamp, Toledo's music gained a cult following on the internet, which resulted in a contract with Matador Records in 2015. That year's Teens Of Style was his first release for the label. Car Seat Headrest's second album with Matador, Teens Of Denial, is out now digitally, with CDs and LPs out July 29. (You may have read about a Cars sample not being approved and delaying the physical release of the album until July.)

Car Seat Headrest, Night Beats Headline Next First Fridays April 1

Car Seat Headrest

The youthful noise-pop of Car Seat Headrest and psych-garage of Night Beats lead a night of entertainment at First Fridays April 1 at the Natural History Museum in L.A.

Live music starts at 8 p.m. Tickets are $18 for non-members. Amoeba will be on hand with our booth and $20 gift certificates for $10; stop by and pick one up! (Limit two per customer.)

With Guided By Voices’ disregard for fidelity and an uncommon wit, passion and tunefulness, Car Seat Headrest’s Teens of Style was a highlight of last year, a compilation of early tracks recorded by Will Toledo in the backseat of his family’s car in Virginia. His next album, Teens of Denial, is due this year. Hear “Something Soon” for an example.

night beats who sold my generation lpNight Beats’ maximum R&B is informed by the likes of The Rolling Stones, James Brown and definitely The Who — the name of the Seattle band’s latest album, Who Sold My Generation. But with attitude, soulful vocals and chops to spare, the band pulls off its retro sound exceedingly well. Check out “No Cops” for a taste.
