Tribute To Legacy of Pioneering Influential Artist Pete Shelley [1955-2018] Co-Founder of Seminal 70’s UK Punk Band Buzzcocks

Posted by Billyjam, December 7, 2018 11:43am | Post a Comment

Sad news emerged yesterday that Buzzcocks lead singer/guitarist Pete Shelley had died from a suspected heart attack, as first reported on social media by his surviving younger brother Gary McNeish. Aged 63 the British artist born Peter Campbell McNeish, who enjoyed a career as both solo artist and co-founder of seminal UK punk band Buzzcocks, had been living in Estonia up until his passing on the morning of December 6th, 2018.

In 1975 while attending college Shelley and Howard Devoto co-founded the early era UK punk band Buzzcocks who made their influential debut performance opening for the Sex Pistols in Manchester in 1976. In January 1977 they released their debut record, the Spiral Scratch EP which, following the Sex Pistols, The Damned, and The Vibrators, was among the original wave of UK punk releases.

Not long after the release of Spiral Scratch in 1977 Howard Devoto left the band with Shelley then moving center stage as lead singer/songwriter and guitarist. As such he honed the band’s distinctive power-punk style.

New "What's In My Bag?" Episode with Matt Pinfield

Matt Pinfield What's In My Bag? Amoeba Music

"I have 20,000 records on a freighter waiting to come to my place in San Francisco," says TV host and video DJ Matt Pinfield. "I'm replacing stuff or getting stuff that I can listen to that I've just been dying to hear." Pinfield recently took a trip to Amoeba Hollywood, his "favorite record store in the country," and let us take a peek into his bag, which included records both classic and new.

Matt Pinfield All These Things That I've DoneAs the host of 120 Minutes, MTV/VH1 personality Matt Pinfield became a familiar face for music fans. During the mid-'90s he hosted a number of MTV shows, later parlaying his musical knowledge into a position as Vice President of A & R and Artist Development for Columbia Records in 2001. An experienced radio host, he began his career as a college radio DJ and Music Director at Rutgers University's WRSU-FM. He can now be heard in the mornings at San Francisco's KFOG, on weekends through Cumulus Media's Flashback show, and on SiriusXM's Lithium channel on weekday mornings.

Pinfield was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2008. He has played himself in an episode of Portlandia and made cameo appearances on albums by several artists. In 2016 he published a memoir, All These Things That I've Done: My Insane, Improbable Rock Life.

There certainly was a strong David Bowie presence in Matt Pinfield's picks, as he not only bought the Five Years 1969-1973 Bowie box set, but also the Bowie-produced All The Young Dudes by Mott the Hoople, and the latest movie soundtrack by legendary singer/songwriter Scott Walker, who Pinfield first learned about from Bowie covering Scott Walker. Pinfield spoke about the importance of the legendary musician in his life, saying Bowie was his "gateway to looking further and seeing what else was out there. Which is really the m.o. and the template for what we were doing with 120."

Ariel Pink – Heaven Knows What [OST]
[Pink Ninja Star Shaped 7”]

Ariel Pink wrote the song “I Need a Minute” for the indie film Heaven Knows What, which stars Arielle Holmes and is based on her memoir about heroin addiction. You can watch the video for the warped dream-pop track below. The B-side may be even more notable—it’s a collaboration between Pink and Dev Hynes (Blood Orange) called “Heaven Can’t Wait.”
