Jaime Jones - What's In My Bag? Amoeba Music

Welsh DJ, producer, and Hot Creations label co-founder Jamie Jones did some shopping at Amoeba Hollywood recently for our latest What's In My Bag? episode. One of his current favorites is Negro Swan, the latest album by Blood Orange. Not only is he a huge Blood Orange fan in general, but Jones was especially fond of Georgia Anne Muldrow's guest appearance on the album. "I've heard a few of her songs before and I love what she does," he proclaimed. "I was going to buy this today and there was a vinyl copy which is even better."

Jamie Jones is known for his unique brand of warmer, more melody-driven techno. Named Resident Advisor's Top DJ of 2011, Jones first became a force in the scene through his mid-'00s DJs Can Dance warehouse parties in East London and summer gigs on Ibiza, including the Circoloco day parties at DC10. Inspired by Larry Levan’s Paradise Garage, Jones launched the now legendary Paradise series of parties. Born in Ibiza, Paradise regularly travels the globe. taking place in cities like NYC, Miami, LA, Toronto, and Moscow.

Hot Creations labelAs a member of the British-American electronic group Hot Natured, Jones found mainstream recognition in the UK, after the group's single "Benediction" landed at #31 on the singles chart. A frequent honorary at the DJ Awards, Jones has been nominated multiple times for Best Tech House DJ, Breakthrough DJ, and Best International DJ. He has been awarded the crown of Best Deep House DJ several times. In addition to his performance career, Jones also heads the prolific Hot Creations label and its subsidiary labels, Emerald City and Hottrax.

Best of 2016

With the holiday season fast approaching and 2016 drawing to an end, we decided to take a look back at some of our favorite releases for the year. Staff from all three of our stores --  in Hollywood, San Francisco, and Berkeley -- shared their picks for the year's best music and movies and told us a little about what made them so awesome. So hop in the Amoeba sleigh with us, won't you, as we go on a magical holiday journey through the early months of 2016 till now, adventuring from world music to rock 'n' roll and everything in between, savoring the most memorable works from some of our most beloved artists. (It might even give you a few swell ideas for record-shaped stocking stuffers.)

Best of 2016 - rock

Anohni Hopelessness

ANOHNI - Hopelessness

I have been a fan of Anohni (formerly known as Antony & the Johnsons) for a long time now. She has another one of those distinctive voices that there is no confusing for someone else. Another great album produced by the amazing ANOHNI. The words in the songs are so full of emotion and power it is almost too much to handle sometimes. This album somehow feels like it is in the future. The songs are very set in the present. But the music really takes me to the future. Or at least makes me feel like we will be OK as long as we have ANOHNI to help guide us through the uncertain future. - Brad, Hollywood

Dev Hynes aka Blood Orange

Devonte "Dev" Hynes is a British singer, songwriter, producer, composer, and author who is known by the stage names Blood Orange and Lightspeed Champion, the latter taken from a comic strip Hynes drew as a teenager. Hynes got his start as a member of the short-lived England based band, Test Icicles. In high demand as a producer and songwriter, Hynes has written for artists such as Florence and the Machine, The Chemical Brothers, Basement Jaxx, Sky Ferreira and Solange Knowles, among others.

Blood Orange's follow up to his 2011 debut, Coastal Groovesis the super collaborative production, Cupid Deluxe (Domino Recording Co, 2013). On Cupid Deluxe Hynes digs a little deeper to touch upon stories of change and people forgotten, but he still delivers those catchy pop textures we love from him. The album's 11 tracks take us from smooth backseat make-out music to funky influenced boom bap. There's a good reason why Hynes was hailed as the "20th coolest person in rock." Everyone could use a little Cupid Deluxe in their life.
