Amoeba Hollywood's top 50 sellers of 2017

Without a doubt, our customers love Kendrick Lamar and Mac DeMarco. They both had three albums appear on our list of the best-selling albums of 2017. Among the classic best-sellers like Michael Jackson's Thriller and Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon were debut albums from Khalid and SZA. New anniversary reissues were a hot ticket in 2017, with the 50th anniversary editions of Pet Sounds and Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band selling especially well.

Read on to see the full list of Amoeba Hollywood's Top 50 Sellers of 2017.

Khalid American Teen

50. Khalid - American Teen (Released March 2017)

Singer/songwriter Khalid's debut album features the hit single "Location," with its atmosphere of stoned partying, chill vibes, and romantic longing. Treading somewhere in the realm of neo-soul hip hop and unbridled sunshiny pop, American Teen rejects any notion of nihilism and bitterness to create an album that's pure happiness. Bay Area fans were treated to a very special acoustic performance by Khalid at Amoeba SF back when his album first dropped.

New "What's In My Bag?" Episode with Cornelius

Cornelius What's In My Bag? Amoeba Music

Japanese electronic artist and producer Cornelius (Keigo Oyamada) came shopping at Amoeba Hollywood recently and picked out several groovy and far out records, including avant-garde compositions and obscure European soundtracks. The first selection in this What's In My Bag? episode is Sesso Matto (a.k.a. How Funny Can Sex Be?), an Italian sexploitation comedy featuring a funky soundtrack by Armando Trovajoli. Oyamada reveals that some of his early beats are sampled from that record. Oyamada also picked up the soundtrack to Alejandro Jodorowsky's cult classic The Holy Mountain, as well as some cool electronic classical records from Steve Reich and Terry Riley.

But which classical composer's piece did Beck ask Cornelius to remix? And which new Danish band did his son introduce him to? You'll have to watch the video to find out:

Beck Vinyl Reissues

The inimitable Beck has announced he's reissuing his entire Interscope/Geffen/DGC catalog on vinyl, with the first round of releases out on December 2nd. This is great news for fans, as many of Beck's most beloved releases hit stores in the era when CDs were king, which means finding a vinyl copy of your favorite LP can get pretty expensive. That's all about to change this Friday, however, when the first three reissue albums arrive in our stores. Here's what's on the way.

Odelay

Odelay

Beck's second LP is perhaps his most famous, with classic tracks like "Where It's At," "Devils Haircut," and "The New Pollution." Not surprisingly, Odelay is Beck's top-selling album of all time and consistently ranks in roundups of the best albums of the '90s. Odelay took home the Grammy for Best Alternative Music Album in 1997, and Beck received nods for Album of the Year and Best Male Rock Vocal Performance.

Cattle Decapitation

San Diego deathgrind band Cattle Decapitation is known for their songs Cattle Decapprotesting the mistreatment of animals and enviornmental abuse. Since forming in 1996, they have released seven studio albums and just teased a follow up to 2014's Monolith Of Inhumanity, which is slated for release later this year (more details to be announced May 20th).

Vocalist Travis Ryan and bassist Derek Engemann visited Amoeba Hollywood recently to do some record shopping. The two picked up an eclectic mix of music, including a few albums fans might not expect. Travis kicks things off with A Tribute To Bethlehem, the German metal band. Derek shows off a Dark Funeral tatoo to go with his new copy of The Secrets Of The Black Arts (Century Media) and we learn a little secret about why he loves this record so much. Travis finds two psychedelic gems from Turkish folk-rocker Selda Bagcan and gets his hands on a copy of Beck's Morning Phase (Capitol) pressed on 180 gram vinyl. In true record shopping fashion, Derek spots an album by Pagan-metal band Bornholm and picks the album solely based on its cover art. From psychedelic folk to experimental noise to pop vocal and metal, Travis and Derek dig for it all. Watch the full episode below to see all their finds:
