KAYTRANADA - What's In My Bag? Amoeba Music

KAYTRANADA visited Amoeba Hollywood recently to do a little shopping and sit down with us for an interesting and eclectic What's In My Bag? interview. The Haitian-Canadian DJ and producer extraordinaire talked about hometown hero A-Trak, the early '80s R&B and disco scene in Africa, the debut album from French electronic duo Justice, and much, much more.

KAYTRANADA is the musical project of Louis Kevin Celestin. Born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, Celestin's KAYTRANADA - Nothin Like Ufamily moved to Montreal, Canada, where he grew up. He began DJing at fourteen. He started learning production a year later after being introduced to FL Studio by his brother. In 2010, he began performing under the alias Kaytradamus, switching to his current incarnation as KAYTRANADA in 2012. In 2016, he released his debut LP 99.9% via XL Recordings. 2014 has been a big year for our "What's In My Bag?" series. All of our episodes are now captured and presented in gorgeous full HD and inscribed with a rad new hand-drawn logo. With our new tools we are continuing to try and step up our game creatively and seek out guests as interesting and uncommon as the items that are found in each episodes. This year we featured a Belgian pop star, a godfather of hip hop, an ace baker, a pair of British psych pop legends, a child star, an '80s icon, and not one but two Flaming Lips.

Here is our list of the Top 10 episodes from 2014, but since we couldn't leave it at just 10 check out the honorable mentions as well. Enjoy and thanks for watching!!

10) Michel Faber

Dutch-born author Michel Faber (Under the Skin, The Crimson Petal and the White) visited Amoeba San Francisco where he picked up an eclectic and esoteric selection ranging from folk to rock to experimental and beyond. He also waxes poetic about the beauty of vinyl packaging and the idea of an album as a book.

New "What's In My Bag?" Episode with DJ A-Trak

A-Trak

From label executive to GRAMMY nominated producer to lifestyle icon, A-Trak rocks many hats. Literally. Most people in the pop culture world might only know him as Kanye West's personal tour DJ, but that is only one small piece to the multifaceted Alain Macklovitch. At the age of 15, A-Trak became the youngest (and the first Canadian) to win the coveted DMC World DJ Championship title. He holds the distinction of being the first DJ to win all three major DJ competitions (DMC, ITF and Vestax), and was the first to win five World Championships. He's basically the Michael Jordan of the DJ world.

Over the years A-Trak has toured extensively with Kanye West and has lent his skills to the likes of Jay-Z, Common, Lupe Fiasco and Drake. In 2007, he founded the Fool's Gold label and helped launch the careers of Kid Sister, Danny Brown and Kid Cudi. He also developed and published music notation for scratching. Today he's hailed as a go-to tastemaker and collaborates with major brands, lending his image to ad campaigns for Adidas, Grey Goose and Cadillac.
