Elvis Costello and The Imposters Look Now CD (also on vinyl LP, Deluxe CD, Deluxe LP,
+ Deluxe LP Red Vinyl)  (Concord Records)

Elvis Costello and The Imposters are back with a new release this Friday, October 12th; Look Now CD (also on vinyl LP, Deluxe CD, Deluxe LP,  Deluxe LP Red Vinyl)  via Concord Records. The new Costello album sounds as good as he did back in the day circa  Imperial Bedroom - the album widely considered  Elvis Costello's best songwriting work to date. It is also the Elvis album that the highly anticipated new Costello album has been repeatedly compared to by critics, as well as by the artist himself.

If we could make an album with the scope of Imperial Bedroom and some of the beauty and emotion of Painted From Memory, we would really have something,” Costello said in a prepared statement several months ago referencing both his 1998 album with Burt Bacharach and his and The Attractions  stellar album from three and a half decades ago. That landmark 1982 album had clearly been on the artist's mind over the past year since he had also been playing tracks off it on his most recent tour dates.

The new Costello album comes on the heels of the artist rebounding from a unnerving but luckily not deadly health scare. "Small but very aggressive cancerous malignancy," forced Costello earlier this year to cancel half a dozen dates of his 2018 European tour so as to go in for surgery that fortunately beat the cancer.

For the brand new Look Now CD (also on vinyl LPDeluxe CDDeluxe LP, + Deluxe LP Red Vinyl)  on Concord Records, Costello teams up with his pals The Imposters featuring Steve Nieve on keyboards, Davey Faragher on bass, and former Attractions member Pete Thomas on drums. Look Now  is the first album by Costello with The Imposters in a decade. 2008's Lost Highway Records release of Momofuku was the ensemble's last collective work. Look Now is the first new album from Elvis Costello in five years.

That last new Costello full-length release was his funky neo-soul collaboration with
The Roots via the Blue Note Recordings 2013 release of Wise Up Ghost (also on 2LP vinyl). As collectors will note there was additionally a nice Wise Up Ghost Deluxe edition CD version that featured an additional four album tracks. Similarly the new 2018 Costello album also comes in Deluxe CD and Deluxe LP versions that offer an additional four more tracks. These songs are “Isabelle In Tears,” “Adieu Paris (L'Envie Des Etoiles),” “The Final Mrs. Curtain” and  “You Shouldn’t Look At Me That Way.” The latter is from the 2017 movie starring Annette Bening, Jamie Bell, and Julie Walters; Film Stars Don’t Die In Liverpool.

The dozen songs (sixteen on the Deluxe version) of Look Now are mostly exclusively penned by Costello
himself with the exception of some major star help on a few tracks including “Burnt Sugar Is So Bitter” that Carole King co-wrote and “Photographs Can Lie” and “Don’t Look Now” which were both co-written with Burt Bacharach who also collaborates on piano with Costello and the Imposters on the album on each of these two ballads. Hence the Costello pre-album statement referencing both Imperial Bedroom and his 1998 collaboration with Bacharach; Painted From Memory: The New Songs of Bacharach & Costello.

Other standout tracks include "Under Lime,"  "Unwanted Number," and "Suspect My Tears" - each of which can be previewed in Audio/Lyric YouTube versions above and below.  Produced by Costello himself along with co-producer Sebastian Krys, the new album was recorded at studios in Canada and the US including Vancouver, Hollywood and New York City. To be released this Friday, Oct 12th, you can now preorder Elvis Costello and The Imposters  Look Now CD (also on vinyl LPDeluxe CDDeluxe LP, + Deluxe LP Red Vinyl)  that ships free anywhere in the USA.
Next month Elvis Costello and The Imposters will kick off a sixteen date, one month North American tour in support of the new album that begins November 2nd at the Sands Bethlehem Event Center in Bethlehem, PA and ends on December 3rd at the Paramount in Seattle, WA with three California dates including House of Blues Anaheim on Nov 28th,  The Wiltern in LA on Nov 29th, and The Masonic in San Francisco on December 1st.
