Act of Defiance What's In My Bag? Amoeba Music

Henry Derek and Chris Broderick of metal band Act of Defiance were at Amoeba Hollywood recently for a cool What's In My Bag? interview. The band members' picks often went beyond the realm of metal and included artists like gospel-bluesman Washington Phillips, Beat writer William S. Burroughs, and performance artist Anna Homler, whose alter-ego Breadwoman Derek found particularly fascinating. "Apparently she was influenced by the population of homeless women in downtown Los Angeles," he told us, adding "she developed her own language that she sings in." Both members of the band had an eclectic mix of records, making for an interesting and entertaining video.

Act of Defiance Old Scars, New WoundsLos Angeles-based supergroup Act of Defiance fuses death metal, thrash, hardcore, and speed metal to create harsh, abrasive, extreme metal. Formed in 2014 after Megadeth guitarist Chris Broderick and drummer Shawn Drover both departed the group, Act of Defiance also features the talents of frontman Henry Derek (Scar the Martyr, Thrown Into Exile) and bassist Matt Bachand (Shadows Fall).

In 2015, Act of Defiance released their debut LP Birth and the Burial on Metal Blade. Two years later, the band followed their well-received first album with Old Scars, New Wounds, an impressive evolution in their sound that showcased their ability for technical, speed-driven, punishing metal. In July 2018, Act of Defiance hit the road for a North American tour with Armored Saint, before heading over to Europe. Catch them back in Los Angeles at The Regent Theater on August 18.

Broderick started off his picks with an Iron Maiden coffee mug, stating, "I love coffee and, of course, I love Iron Maiden." Leaning heavier on the metal side of things, he also grabbed Meshuggah's I, explaining, "when I first stumbled on to Meshuggah, it was almost like hearing a band that would compose music that I thought I was gonna compose before I had composed it...I releated to the music so much." It wasn't all metal for Broderick though, who grabbed a collection of one of his "all-time favorite guitarists," the flamenco master Paco de Lucia and jazz legend Chick Corea called Solo  Piano: Standards.

Derek grabbed a collection of unreleased songs by the "criminally underrated" L.A. band Concrete Blonde as well as Darren Aronofsky's controversial, pyschological horror film, mother! "This is my kind of movie," he exclaimed, "fun for the whole family."

But what are one of Henry Derek and Chris Broderick's favorite, current, thrash metal bands? You'll have to watch the video to find out:
