This Friday evening, January 12th 5-9pm, the Oakland Museum of CA (OMCA) is set to launch its new 2018 Winter Season of Friday Nights @ OMCA. Expanding upon the concept of the once a month First Fridays into a weekly series, Friday Nights @ OMCA include  music (DJs include resident dION dECIBELS who specializes in hip-hop, funk, & soul), dance lessons, various food trucks, and additional art. That's in addition to the regular presentations at the East Bay museum which bills itself as "the museum of us" and is has built a rep for its interactive exhibits covering art, history and science. Even better is that Friday Nights @ OMCA offer half price admission (and free for ages 18 and under) so it’s a good opportunity to check out the downtown Oakland museum's ever changing exhibits. Currently on display is their latest; Take Root: Oakland Grows Food. More akin to a how-to class, this unique for a museum exhibit is a hands-on display that features tips from farmers and community growers on the health, environmental and economic benefits of DIY food provisions. This exhibit, like all of OMCA’s community themed presentations, is geared for all ages to learn constructive things from.

Another exhibit is OMCA’s popular but soon to close Days of the Dead: Metamorphosis & Migration which is inspired by the lifecycle of the Monarch Butterfly which is distinguished by its annual transgenerational mass migration. Metamorphosis & Migration  examines art and ofrendas (altars) that analyze both new and older established customs of remembrance and ritual.  This exhibit closes this weekend at the end of Sunday Jan 14th.  Unique to Friday Nights, but happening only every fourth week, is OMCA’s new Acoustic Space series which is a co performance experiences that happen inside the OMCA galleries. The next one is in a week on January 19th. Meanwhile OMCA’s Friday live music outdoors concerts will resume Friday March 23 when the weather gets better and the next (Summer) season is unveiled.

Fridays 5–9 pm admission is half-off for adults with an additional $4 charge for special exhibitions. Ages 18 and under are always free on Friday Nights @ OMCA. OMCA is located one block from the Lake Merritt BART Station. Event parking is available at the Museum for a $7 flat fee after 5 pm. Museum garage closes at 10 pm.
