The wandering fool

“All that is gold does not glitter, not all those who wander are lost.”
- J.R.R.Tolkien

One must ponder what Dion DiMucci thought when he first heard his second masterpiece, "The Wanderer," covered superiorly by the psychedelic Chilean group Los Mac's. In my noodle, I picture the band of young lads coming down the hill after band practice in one those funicular railcars in Valparaíso, with creative glows on their faces for the American hit song that they transformed and truly took seven dimensions further into the weirdo zone than Dion could have ever dreamed at the time.

Tsegue-Maryam GuebrouWhen you put a Tsegue-Maryam Guebrou record on the phonograph, you are instantly whisked away to another land, with warm winds in your hair and your feet twinkling in the Danakil Desert sand. The reclusive Ethiopian nun is little known for her beautiful piano melodies. Once only available on the Éthiopiques Vol 21 CD [also see The Very Best Of Éthiopiques: Cult Hits from the Original Series, - Ed.], you can now get her dreamy Erik Satie-ish compositions on vinyl, recently put out by Mississippi Records...up in Portland...home to Mary's Club, where I once ate a dozen delicious lil' smokies in barbecue sauce for $3 while watching a tantalizing seductress dance to the song "Ocean" from the The Velvet Underground. If Tsegue was there, she would have had "Nun" of that!

While "pounding the pork chops" and listening to "Wandering Guitars" on Werner Müller's Eastern Sounds album, it can make it difficult for one to decide whether to make Japanese tonkatsu with Bulldog sauce or a Schnitzel with Lingonberry sauce. Oh how the thoughts can wander...much like Jiro the super android, whose haunting guitar strikes fear into the souls of the diabolic terrorist organization DARK. Keep wandering Jiro...keep fighting evil...Go! Go! Go! Kikaida!

And let me finish my dreams to you with the true wanderer, Eden Ahbez.

"I heard the tune in the mist of the California mountains," is how Eden claimed that the melody for "Nature Boy" came to him.

Eden's Island album on Del-Fi Records is an exotica album like no other. And if you have never heard of him, I will let you discover Eden on your own with this appetizer sample. (Plus Mike Lucas wrote the liner notes! There's nothing that Lone Surfer can't do!)
