Top Five New Hip-Hop Releases Week Ending 06:11:17

1: J. Stalin My Dark Passenger (Livewire)

2. Blacastan The Uncanny Adventures Of Watson & Holmes  (Brick Records)

3. DJ Spinna  TB Or Not TB 12" (Local Talk)

4. Lupe Fiasco  The Cool LP  (Atlantic)

5. Notorious B.I.G. & Faith Evans
The King & I (also on vinyl/LP) (Rhino)

Topping the hip-hop top five of the latest new arrivals into Amoeba Music is prolific Oakland rap star / label owner J.Stalin's brand new album My Dark Passenger  which follows on the heels of his previous 2017 full-length I Don't Sell Dope No Moe. Unleashed just a scant three months ago, that album similarly dropped on his successful homegrown indie rap label Livewire Records. Although officially not to be released until this Friday, June 16th, the eleven track new album My Dark Passenger  has been available from Amoeba a week in advance. With such select album guest collaborators as Young Doe, Da Hoodstarz, J. Stew and  4rAx, My Dark Passenger delivers more of that uncompromising West Oakland proud rap style/flow that continues the (now) decades old tradition of raw no-holds-barred Oakland street rap that fans love and the mainstream (generally speaking) continues to sleep on. According to those in the know, there's even more J.Stalin music coming in 2017 including a reputed DJ Fresh collaborative full-length.  Scroll down to the videos below for a taste of J.Stalin in 2017 with both the audio-only of the LT Beats produced My Dark Passenger title track featuring regular collaborator/Livewire artist Joseph Kay whose got an upcoming album entitled Rated X, plus the music video for the  I Don't Sell Dope No Moe track "Realist to Run It" also featuring Joseph Kay.

Other new arrivals at Amoeba include DJ Spinna' TB Or Not TB 12" single, and gifted Hartford, CT emcee Blacastan's The Uncanny Adventures Of Watson & Holmes.  It comes via the Boston, MA underground label Brick Records. A joint project with super-producer Stu Bangas the recommended new album features such tight cuts as "Summa Con Laude" featuring his old pal, fellow Connecticut rapper Apathy as guest mic wrecker. See the track's accompanying new music video below. Another new video below, but from last year's critically and commercially acclaimed album and the Anonymous Nobody (also on vinyl/LP), is De La Soul's "Drawn" featuring Little Dragon. A new chart entry but not really a new release of this past week is Lupe Fiasco's  The Cool LP  (Atlantic) which is a vinyl repress, a decade later, of the Chicago emcee's 2007 album released on Warner in 2007 and now back in print this week via Atlantic.

Meanwhile The King & I (also on vinyl/LP) can be filed under soul / hip-hop in addition to the category "kind of posthumous" since it is a combo of new Faith Evans vocals with verses from Biggie who was murdered 20 years ago. Released by Rhino this new album finds the rapper's R&B singer widow Faith Evans (in top form) singing new verses matched up with recycled ones from The Notorious B.I.G  that fans of the Brooklyn rap legend will have heard before, albeit not in this newly recorded and mixed presentation. Unlike Biggie's contemporary and rival, the late great 2Pac, whose posthumous vaults were deep and hence the many more releases from Tupac after his 1996 murder, The Notorious B.I.G.'s vaults left little to mine for those fans fiending for more new music from the beloved artist who left this world at far too young an age. The music video for the new album track "Legacy" appears below.

In related Biggie news, recently the mural of the rapper in Bed Stuy in his NYC home borough that had been planned for a whitewash got saved at the last minute. Painted two years ago by street artists Rocko and Zimer the mural (pictured right), one of many around NYC over the years (such as the one on the new album cover), is located on the side of a brick building at the intersection of Bedford Avenue and Quincy Street. See image left. And in other Biggie related news, Bad Boy record label founder Sean "P Diddy/Puffy" Combs whose early success can be attributed in large part to Biggie's talents, continues to be a successful music mogul. As published by Forbes on Monday, the rapper, producer, singer, songwriter, actor, and more importantly entrepreneur (from Sean John clothing to Ciroc vodka to Revolt TV etc.) was named "the world's highest paid entertainer" with an estimated net worth of $820 million! In the same annual report Beyonce came in second place, thanks in part to the success of her 2016 album Lemonade (to be released next month in special yellow vinyl LP format), with an estimated net worth of $105 million according to Forbes.

And finally the two hot picks of the week (with videos below) include South Central rapper who should be huge already G.Perico, and upcoming Amoeba Berkeley instore not to miss: billy woods and company on June 24th. Drawing well founded comparisons to DJ Quik, the fellow LA area rap talent G Perico is a rarity in rap these days: a new artist who effortlessly bridges the gap between rap's past and future. With his distinctly LA rap sound, last year G Perico turned heads with the release of the underground Shit Don't Stop LP on Omerta Inc.. Since then he's been dropping a ton of videos with hopefully a new album later this year when, no doubt, he will be making national year end best of lists. Check out the prolific artist's latest music video for "Bacc Forth" below.

Meanwhile totally underrated longtime East Coast hip-hop great billy woods will be doing an instore at the East Bay Amoeba store on Saturday June 24th at 2pm along with the aptly named The Unknowns: PremRock & Fresh Kils, and Henry Canyons. Read more about this must-attend Amoeba instore here. And below see the latest billy woods video from Known Unknowns for the Blockhead produced, pro wake-and-bake track "Groundhogs  Day."
