The above Andre NIckatina promo pic was taken by Bay Area photographer Timi D.... in 1998 for both the artist formerly known as Dre Dog's Fillmoe Coleman company and for long defunct label DogDay Records who that year released the longtime prolific San Francisco rapper's album Raven In My Eyes.  The promo/publicity photo is one of ten photos in this sixth installment of the 1990's Promo Pics Amoeblog series. The series is a tribute to artists as well as the photographers and record labels responsible for sending them out at the time. The previous posts in this series (1990's Promo Pics Part I Part II, Part III , Part IV and Part V)  included such artists as Das EFX, The RootsMasta Ace Incorporated and Black Sheep.  In addition to the usual rap artist pictures, this latest installment also includes a few non hip-hop artists.

These non-rap (but related) promo pics include the 1996 shot of Erykah Badu taken by photogrpaher Mark Baptiste for Kedar Entertainment and Universal Records to promote her 1997 debut Baduizm, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers photo by Marina Chavez.  Taken for Warner Brothers, it was for the Peppers' 1995 album One Hot Minute (also on LP) which was the anticipated follow up to the group's multi-platiunum hit Blood Sugar Sex Majik (also on LP) and the first with guitarist Dave Navarro having joined the group. The other non-rap promo pic is of George Clinton taken  for Intersound by Marcy Guiragossian for the September 1997 2CD set Live…..And Kickin' by George Clinton & The P-Funk All Stars

Meantime the rap/hip-hop promo pics include one of Jeru the Damaja taken by Daniel Hastings for PayDay Records in 1996 for the "Come Clean" star's second album Wrath of the Math (also avail in vinyl/LP format), and another of DJ Quik. Taken for Arista Records for his fourth album Rhythm-al-ism, it is the second publicity photo in this 90's promo pic series of the LA artist. Other LA area artists include the Mack 10 photo by Michael Miller for Hoo Bangin' and Priority Records for the album Mack 10, and the 1992 photo of Above The Law for Ruthless/Giant. Featuring Go Mack, Total Ka-os, Cold 187um, and KM G, the pic was utilized to promote the group's secon album Black Mafia Life that featured N.W.A's MC Ren and Eazy-E, and Digital Underground's Money B and 2Pac. Tupac Shakur himself is featured in another promo pic in this installment: one of him as "Bishop" alongside Omar Epps as "Q" in a publicity still from the 1992 Paramount Pictures photo by Adger W. Cowans for the movie Juice.

The other 1990's promo pics include one of San Francisco rap group 11/5 for DogDay Records, whose Andre Nickatina promo pic is at the top of this piece. Another Bay Area act once associated with the now defunct East Bay based DogDay Records is The Coup who are included here from earlier years when they were with Wild Pitch Records. That photo of The Coup (when E-Roc was still with the Boots Riley fronted group) is part of a three-panel promo shot for Wild Pitch and Jcor Entertainment that also included O.C. and Chill Rob G. That 3 panel promo pic is the first of many below.
