Ice Cube + N.W.A's MC Ren & DJ Yella To Co-Headline Treasure Island Music Fest (Oct 16/17) for Last Year on Island [+ Sigur Rós]

Looking like an almost N.W.A reunion (sans Dr. Dre and the late Eazy-E), Ice Cube "featuring"  MC Ren and DJ Yella at this October's Treasure Island Music Festival has been generating a buzz among hip-hop fans in the Bay Area since the lineup announcement yesterday. The tenth and final San Francisco Bay island located music festival on October 16 & 17, the festival will feature co-headliner Sigur Rós. Many rap fans have taken to social media to project their thoughts/hopes for the Cube & co. set. Some have suggested that the anticipated performance by the star rapper-turned-actor along with his two former N.W.A rap crew mates could result in an N.W.A reunion of sorts. All it would take would be to arrange for Dr. Dre to fly into town to join his former Compton rap crew and arrange for that hologram of Eazy-E that was premiered at Rock The Bells three years ago. See video below of that 2013 performance by Bone Thugs-N-Harmony featuring the life like hologram of the late Eazy-E plus Yella onstage.

The N.W.A reunion suggested by fans of the pioneering gangsta rap group, whose influential landmark 1988 debut album Straight Outta Compton would define the genre, is not such a far-fetched idea. You'll recall that just two months ago at Coachella Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, Yella, and MC Ren all appeared onstage together in what was referred to by Cube as an "N.W.A. reunion." Taking place on weekend two of the April 2016 festival in Indio CA, in a set that included the N.W.A. classics "Straight Outta Compton" and "Fuck The Police" they were joined by Young-E (Eazy-E's son). Many suggest that a hologram of the real Eazy-E would be closer to the real N.W.A.  But all agree that some kind of N.W.A reunion would make for the perfect finale of the Treasure Island Music Festival scheduled for the island that gave it its title.  A part of San Francisco's District Six, as with everything else in the hot property market that is San Francisco, the reason for the Treasure Island music festival to have to move from its titular island home is no doubt directly linked to the multi-billion dollar development project underway on the prime location island in the middle of the Bay. So far no word on where next year's festival will take place. But if it isn't on the man-made Treasure Island (constructed for the Golden Gate Exposition in 1939) or the adjoining Yerba Buena Island, it will really need to change its name.

Along with Cube, Ren & Yella and Sigur Ros, the full lineup for the final Treasure Island located Treasure Island Music Festival will include the following:  James Blake, Purity Ring, Young Thug, Mura Masa, Deafheaven, Kelela, How To Dress Well, Hinds Car Seat Headrest, HONNE, Kamaiyah, Tycho, Glass Animals, Wild Nothing, Day WaveMac DeMarco, ZHU, Flight Facilities, Neon Indian, Duke Dumont, Sylvan Esso, Christine And The Queens and Stormzy.
