SFJazz Collective

Amoeba Music is proud to sponsor SFJAZZ’s resident all-star ensemble SFJAZZ Collective as they present sparkling new arrangements of music by the King of Pop, Michael Jackson, plus freshly minted compositions by the Collective at SFJAZZ Center from October 22 - 25th.

Jackson’s celebrity burned so brightly it often obscured the brilliance of his musical mind, a situation that’s only grown more pronounced since his death in 2009. The SFJAZZ Collective puts the spotlight back where it belongs, interpreting lesser known gems as well as epochal hits from his diverse and endlessly inventive songbook. Much like their investigation of Stevie Wonder’s musical treasure trove, the Collective brings the same probing intelligence, incisive lyricism, harmonic insight, and rhythmic energy to well-crafted pop tunes as to material conceived for jazz settings.

Inspired by the full breadth of American music, the octet continues to build on a bold decade-long legacy creating original music and exploring the work of nonpareil composers from Ornette Coleman, John Coltrane, Herbie Hancock, and Thelonious Monk to Wayne Shorter, McCoy Tyner, Horace Silver, Chick Corea, and Joe Henderson.

SFJAZZ Collective's current line-up includes Miguel Zenon (alto saxophone), David Sanchez (tenor saxophone), Sean Jones (trumpet), Robin Eubanks (trombone), Warren Wolf (vibraphone), Edward Simon (piano), Matt Penman (bass), and Obed Calvaire (drums).
