Amoeba Hollywood Hip-Hop Top Five Chart Week Ending 09:26:14

1) Ray West & OC Ray's Cafe (Red Apple 45)

2) Kenny Dope Classic Breakbeats Limited-Edition 45-Box-Set (Kay-Dee)

3) Slimkid3 & DJ Nu-Mark self titled  (Delicious Vinyl)

4) Danny Brown Hot Soup Instrumentals LP (Street Corner Music)

5) Skyzoo & Torae The Barrel Brothers (Empire Dist)

The above top five is the latest from the Hollywood Amoeba Music store where yesterday the hip-hop cassette section saw a noticeable increase in interest since, along with the other two Amoebas and other record shops, yesterday Cassette Store Day was being celebrated.  A Record Store Day styled day geared for cassette tapes - the format is of special interest to hip-hop since tapes are so embedded in the culture of hip-hop from the deep rooted mix-tapes culture to actual hip-hop releases only on cassette, to once highly coveted dubbed copies of pioneering days hip-hop radio shows. A couple of evenings ago there was a record release party this week's number 3 chart entry, Slimkid3 & DJ Nu-Mark, at Amoeba Hollywood for the excellent collaborative duo's new self titled  release on Delicious Vinyl. During his DJ set Nu-Mark served up a rich mix that included going from Nas' "It Ain't Hard to Tell" into Michael Jackson's "Human Nature."
As well as the other chart entries this week, including     , other new hip-hop albums worth getting include Homeboy Sandman's Hallways and Dilated Peoples' Directors of Photography.  Upcoming releases to be sure to get upon their release include the anticipated se
cond album from Run The Jewels (El-P and Killer Mike) that will arrive care of Nas' new imprint Mass Appeal Records in Amoeba next month. Meantime you can get a free download of the sick-ass album track 'Oh My Darling Don't Cry.'

XXL magazine, the popular long running hip-hop publication that originally launched back in 1997, recently announced that it will cease operating as a print publication with the October/November 2014 edition being the last one in print ever of XXL. The magazine owned by Harris Publications that was very recently taken over by Townsquare Media will continue as an online publication only. The news of this latest magazine to stop printing came just a week after Vibe magazine similarly shut down their print edition.

On Wednesday, October 1st, at San Franicsco's Regency Ballroom is a Bay Area installment of the Red Bull Culture Clash - making its first ever stop in San Francisco and including some of the best of the Bay and promising a night of "4 stages, 4 sounds, 1 winner" as per the flyer below in which the Culture Clash's winner is determined by the audience in attendance and who they support by literally making noise for. "Triple Threat is honored to have been invited to participate," said DJ Shortkut of appropriately titled Triple Threat crew that also features DJs Apollo and VinRoc. 21+ $15 to $25 tickets. E.A.S.Y. - When Will The Bass Drop #LiveRemix (2014)

The undisputed renaissance of the turntablist movement, that's been building up for the past few years, is at an all time high right now in terms of interest in the genre especially with the big 2014 DMC World Championships in London, England just a week away. There's also been a buzz via social networking sites lately amongst former DMC DJ champions. DMC World Champ Chris Karns (formerly DJ Vajra) called out DMC World Online Champ DJ I-Dee, while DMC World Champ DJ Shiftee got the inter web abuzz this past week when he and another former DMC champ - DC area DMC US Champ DJ Enferno promised that they were going to battle in a head to head battle with big stakes for the winner that would take place in DJ Shiftee's NYC apartment on this past Thursday (Sept 25) at exactly 11am NYC time and would be streamed live online for all to watch.

"Ok for those of you that like a good old fashioned battle...It's going down Thurs 11am EST. I'm going into DJ Shiftee' s apartment to battle him for $20k and his gold technics turntables. Full equipment setups. DJ CRAZE refereeing. Stay tuned for the livestream link," - posted DJ Enferno helping build the hype that would backfire in part. Understandably battle DJ fans all over the world in various timezones set their clocks so as not to miss it - however the promised battle turned out to be a hoax or unique way to alert people to the two DJs new collaborative project under the name E.A.S.Y. as seen in video above. The idea backfired with many however since it upset DJ fans who felt  fooled. DJ LazyBoy in Vallejo CA was tuned in at 8am his time but when the battle never materialized (instead a link to the E.A.S.Y. video above) he shrugged his shoulders and posted to Facebook "Well played DJ Shiftee ENFERNO... going back to bed. — feeling annoyed" and Tweeted playingwithmyemotions!

And finally I leave you with a brand new video from two New York City talents - emcee Rabbi Darkside and DJ Rob Swift and their new collaboration track "You & I & The Moon"
