Amoeba Berkeley Hip-Hop Top 5, Week Ending 04:25:14

1) Childish Gambino   Because The Internet [Record Store Day] (LP) (Glassnote)

2) Notorious B.I.G. Life After Death [Clear Vinyl] [Record Store Day] (LP) (Atlantic)

3) J. Stalin S.i.d.-shining I (Town Thizness)

4) Various Artists Mandala Vol. 1: Polysonic Flows (Mello Music Group)

5) Nocando Jimmy the Burnout (Hellfyre Club)

As a result of the mad rush for exclusive Record Store Day releases at Amoeba Music on the incredibly busy RSD 2014 last Saturday some of those releases make up the latest Hip-Hop Top Five weekly chart from the Berkeley Amoeba store where E-Lit, in the video above, does a run down of new releases and what was popular during Record Store Day such as the vinyl version of Childish Gambino's  Because The Internet.  Other new chart entries include Bay Area homegrown talent J. Stalin's in demand new joint S.i.d.-shining I, the excellent Mello Music label compilation sampler Mandala Vol. 1: Polysonic Flows, and brand new Hellfyre Club release Jimmy the Burnout from Nocando.

Meanwhile upcoming releases in the week ahead include Ghanaian American MC/producer Blitz the Ambassador who, on Tuesday April 29th, will unleash his third and latest full-length  Afropolitan Dreams which was preceded by last summer's appropriately titled The Warm Up EP. I have been a fan of this artist  since his hearing his debut album Stereotype back in 2009. At that point Blitz, who was born Samuel Bazawule, had already been recording and releasing tracks and honing his style for a full five years. This newest album of his, of which I heard (and really liked) a couple of advance tracks including "Success" (video below), will feature several collaborators including Angelique Kidjo and Seun Kuti.

DJ Quest 1994 DMC West Coast Eliminations

Above is the incredibly talented albeit widely slept on turntable artist DJ Quest at the San Francisco club DV8 in his hometown 20 full years ago during the 1994 DMC West Coast Eliminations battle busting out, among other skills, impressive variations on the flare turntable technique. Tomorrow, Saturday April 26th, the DJ and the rest of his legendary SF DJ crew - The Bullet Proof Scratch Hamsters (aka Space Travelers) including DJ Cue, Eddie Def, and DJ Marz plus MC Eddie K - will all be at the 2014 DMC San Francisco Regional DJ Battle and DMC Scratch Competition (test run) at club Mighty from noon to 7pm and, who knows, they may do a BPSH reunion set - although officially VinRoc (also one of the judges) is the main showcase performer billed.

Along with VinRoc tomorrow's battle judges will include DJ Apollo (also the host), Eddie Def, DJ Goldenchyld, Pos Red, Teeko, and Kuttin Kandi. The event, which will not include a team competition this years, is being presented by Rane, who will supply the 1st prize: a Rane Sixty One Mixer, in association with Special Tech DJ and DJ Cue.

This week I caught up with DJ Cue to ask him about the significance of this year's battle and what to expect tomorrow?
"I think [that] this year's event is going to be a game changer for DMC," replied Cue. "Adding the scratch battle is something really exciting I think because so many DJ's focus on scratching as part of their regular routine vs putting together battle routines," he said of this anticipated new addition, adding that, "Also it just might get some DJ's out to battle who haven't battled since the 90's. We expect a great turnout and the club is a great venue to host this event at. We look forward to seeing all the Bay Area folks out there supporting the next SF champ and wish them the best when they head to the US battle," said Cue noting that tomorrow, "Will be the first time our crew BPSH has been all in the same place in over 7 years I think. Should be interesting!"
