Amoeba Music Hollywood Hip-Hop Top Five: Week Ending 03:14:14

1) Rick Ross Mastermind (Maybach / Def Jam)

2) ScHoolboy Q Oxymoron (Interscope)

3) The Grouch & Eligh The Tortoise & The Crow (Empire)

4) Kendrick Lamar good kid, m.A.A.d city (Aftermath)

5) Childish Gambino Because the Internet (Glassnote)

Just as last week's number one on the Amoeba Hip-Hop Chart (ScHoolboy Q's Oxymoron) reflected last week’s number one Billboard pop album chart entry so too does this week's number one at Amoeba: Rick Ross’ brand new Mastermind is also the number one seller in the country as per the Billboard Top 200 charts making it Ross’ fifth album to debut at No. 1 nationally. The album features the lead singles "War Ready," "The Devil is a Lie (feat. Jay-Z)," and "Nobody (feat. Diddy and French Montana)" or Puff Daddy as he is ID'ed in the Vevo video version of the single above. The video for the song, which is a homage to Biggie, finds Ross recreated the drive-by shooting attempt on his life a year ago.  Other releases on the latest chart include the recurrent entries from Kendrick Lamar (good kid, m.A.A.d city) and Childish Gambino (Because the Internet).

Meanwhile the other new chart entry this week is from
The Grouch & Eligh (aka G&E) - the ambitious new triple disc, 41 track The Tortoise & The Crow - is unique in that it is the result a very successful Kickstarter fund drive that raised the longtime collaborating pair almost double its initial $50,000 goal when it ended ("funded") on January 5th at just under $91K. As they promised fans in that fundraising drive the album would be one to remember: a triple set with one full length solo Grouch disc, one full length Eligh disc, and one full length of G&E together disc. "We've always been independent even before it was cool," they reminded fans, "from 4 track recordings and dubbed cassettes, all night sessions at Kinko’s and slanging tapes by hand on the streets of Oakland and LA until we had enough $$$ for bus fare and a slice." The triple album set doesn't disappoint either with production input from the likes of Exile, Amp Live, Pretty Lights, Ant of Atmosphere, DJ Fresh, DNAE, Alexander Spit, and both The Grouch and Eligh themselves. Meanwhile mic guests throughout the triple set include Blu, The Grouch, Ellay Khule, Pigeon John(on "Run" - see video below that some great shots of Marin Headlands and looking back to SF and Golden Gate Bridge), Zumbi, Bicasso, Tre Nyce, and (surprise) Kreayshawn who joins G&E on the collaboration track "Hella Fresh."

Army of the Pharaohs  “God Particle”

Upcoming releases include the late April release In Death Reborn from the Army of the Pharaohs; the series that was initiated in 1998 by Jedi Mind Tricks front-man Vinnie Paz as an homage to hip-hop's crews of the 80’s and early 90’s. The Pharaoh clique includes such members as Apathy, Celph Titled,
King Syze, Reef the Lost Cauze, and the Philly hip-hop duo and frequent Jedi Mind Tricks collaborators Outerspace.

Coming four years since their last release In Death Reborn, which arrive in Amoeba on April 22nd via Paz's Enemy Soil label,  will feature the mic skills of Paz, Planetary, Esoteric, Apathy and Celph Titled with production by Stu Bangas and appearances by Blacastan, Zilla, Block McCloud, Demoz, Doap Nixon, and King Magnetic.
Above is the brand new (released this week) lead single/video for “God Particle”

Happening right now and through end of the weekend is South By South West in Austin TX which this year has more hip-hop acts than in any previous year (lots of big names and a slew of up-and-coming rap acts too) so rather than try to list them all here simply follow the SxSW Hip-Hop Twitter feed for all the latest in concerts.
Finally I leave you with the brand new video from Humboldt County rap duo Potluck, comprised of 1 Ton and UnderRated who were profiled on the Amoeblog back in 2009.  Published this week it is for their new song "Real Weed Livin" that is culled from their promo only new mixtape The Humboldt Chronicles.
