MellowHigh – “Extinguisher”

mellowhighThe Odd Future trio MellowHigh (formerly a duo known as MellowHype) are generating much salivation for their first, self-titled album. One listen to the old-school-flavored “Extinguisher” and it’s not hard to hear why. “Hip-hop is back” one of them says near the end of the song. No doubt. The album’s due on Halloween via Odd Future.

Tera Melos – Live at Amoeba video

Nor. Cal.’s Tera Melos are one of the coolest guitar bands around, wrangling their guitar necks around each other with much interlocking riff mayhem. See how they do it with a video of their performance at Amoeba SF below. Read my interview with the band here, and check out their album X’ed Out.

For those who like the cleaner production of the second Best Coast album and the energy of the first, the angsty new Fade Away EP aims to please—preorder it here on CD or LP. The whole thing's streaming right now on Stereogum. Come see the band live at Amoeba Hollywood Oct. 22 at 6 p.m., or catch the show on a live webcast. More info here.

Upset – “You and I” video

In the ’90s, people were really serious about all kinds of shit. Music was about issues, and so were the videos. Post-2000, we’re a lot more fun-loving, aren’t we? Upset’s new video for “You and I,” the punkiest cut off their upcoming debut record, She’s Gone, spoofs Soul Asylum’s dead-serious “Runaway Train” video, profiling a bunch of trust-fund gutter punks. You know these people are out there, don’t lie. Upset is the new band featuring Ali Koehler (of Vivian Girls and formerly of Best Coast), Patty Schemel (formerly of Hole) and Jenn Prince (formerly of La Sera). She’s Gone is due Oct. 29 on Don Giovanni, preorder it here. See where Upset fits into the Vivian Girls Family Tree here.

Mike Donovan – “Do Do Ya” video

Though we’re sad SF sonic explorers Sic Alps have called it quits, its frontman, Mike Donovan, has a new solo album out now called Wot, on Drag City. Check out the psych-folk karaoke video for “Do Do Ya,” and read my interview with him here.
