Guide to Halloween Weekend In The Bay Area

Halloween may not be until Monday but the festivities are already well underway around the Bay Area. This past weekend there were numerous Halloween themed events but this weekend is when things kick into full gear with tons of events happening. This Amoeblog is a general guide to concerts and entertainment for Halloween in the Bay, 2011 for both adults and kids.

First up is the Amoeba sponsored SHOCK-IT-TO-ME! HALLOWEEN SPOOKENANNY at San Francisco's Café Du Nord on Monday, Halloween night. Beginning at 9pm it promises to be "the most insidious show in San Francisco this Ghoultide Season! Bringing back a real sense of old skool All-Hallows-Eve fun" with "a monstrous fright night of horror hosts, maniacal music, creepy contests, and more tricks ‘n treats than you can shake a bloody stake at!" Also on Halloween night, Monday October 31st, is the big Live 105 sponsored Subsonic Halloween Ball at the Regency Ballroom in San Francisco with 2 Many DJs, Fake Blood, Dyloot, Party Ben and many more. At the same Sutter & Van Ness venue two nights earlier is Halloween Massive 2011 - a costume party with hip-hop and house music, giveaways, and prizes. More info on both nights here. At the Elbo Room on Valencia on Saturday is the Bhangra themed Bollyween party featuring Non Stop Bhangra plus BlackMahal live. More info.

Already sold out but promising to be a lot of fun is Bootie SF's special Halloween Booootie party on Saturday night at the Mezzanine (note not the DNA this time) with A plus D, Smash Up Derby, DJ Axel plus "scary performances" from Bay Area Flash Mob, Cookie Dough, and Steven Satyrcon, plus a costume contest. Meanwhile crosstown that same night over at the Rickshaw Stop is Halloween Rock Party! with The Hot Toddies and Ghost & The City, Sun Hop Fat, plus DJ Brother Grimm. Doors at 9pm. Wear costume and get in at reduced rate. 155 Fell Street, San Francisco, CA 94102. More info.

How big is the 17th Annual Freakers Ball at Public Works in San Francisco? So big it had to be spread out over two nights, Friday and Saturday, with performances from Ginz, interactive puppet show Fungineras,  Sub Swara, Little John and much more. More info. Too $hort headlines the Big Nasty Halloween Party at Mezzanine on Friday night. Also on the bill are Vin Sol and Pony P. More info.

A novel sounding event is the Monster Bash aboard the USS Hornet docked in Alameda with haunted tours, costume contests, dancing, the Haunted Hospital and more including a special children's area if you bring the young uns in tow. Also fun sounding is the screening of the silent film The Phantom of the Opera with live music accompaniment at Davies Symphony Hall on Sunday 8pm. On Treasure Island there's a few events happening for Halloween including (on Sunday at 8pm) the dance party A Nightmare on Treasure Island with DJ Eric Morillo and others including John Beaver spinning. More info. The previous night, Saturday Oct 29th, on Treasure Island is the music themed Ghost Ship IV: The Afterlife. More info

While there are oodles of adult themed events for Halloween, kids friendly events are most plentiful too. These include SuperNatural Halloween - Costume Parade at the California Academy of Sciences on Saturday with face-painting, bands, photo booth and trick-or-treating. 6:30 pm - 9:30 pm on Saturday, Oct 29th at 55 Music Concourse Dr., Golden Gate Park, San Francisco, CA 94118. Halloween at the Exploratorium in San Francisco on Sunday afternoon is a well produced kids event that features creepy crawlers, Halloween costumes, sugar skull decorating, graveyard of dead science Ideas,  and the garden of carnivorous Plants. There will also will classic spooky animations from the 1930s/40's/50s. Happens on  Sunday, noon - 4pm. Exploratorium is located at 3601 Lyon Street, San Francisco, California 94123-1099. In the East Bay is the Haunted Hotel: The Candle Lighters Annual Ghost House at the Chadbourne Carriage House in Williams Historical Park, Fremont. Now in its 42nd year this Bay Area Halloween staple happens each day through Monday. On Saturday at 1pm -  there is the installation's Kiddie Parade. Williams Historical Park, Fremont, CA, 94566. Of interest to kids and adults and anyone of any age who appreciate dogs in costumes is the Very Fashionable Howl-O-Ween - Dogs in Halloween Costumes at Cannery Courtyard in San Francisco that benefits the San Francisco SPCA and offers prizes for winners of such categories as Best in Show (Most Original), Most Likely to Make You Howl (Funniest), and Most Likely to Make Your Fur Stand on End (Scariest).
