R Is For Rocket (CD)

Rocket

LA quartet Rocket make quite the impression with their stunning debut album, R Is For Rocket . The band writes noisy, compelling, painfully beautiful songs that will have your heart in your throat. Think My Bloody Valentine if they decided to make a punk rock record. This fuzzed out, hypnotic album is one of the best things you'll hear this year.

MAD! (CD)

Sparks

Sparks are back with another extraordinary record. MAD! is brilliant and boundary-pushing; with five decades together, this is a band that just keeps getting better and better. Catchy, off-kilter, clever, and unlike anything out there, these songs cover ground from backpack brands and the women who love them to performative devotion. No one does it like Sparks and MAD! is an album you'll want to savor.

Getting Killed (CD)

Geese

Geese are not the type of band to play it safe. Their latest, Getting Killed , is wildly experimental, filled with twists and turns, and just straight up exciting. Opener "Trinidad" starts off like a distorted '70s R&B moodpiece before bursting into full-on punk rock chaos. It's thrilling and a good introduction to this kooky album. "100 Horses" is unhinged psych rock, "Taxes" sounds like a confessional folk crooner discovering The Stooges midway through the song. Expect the unexpected on the fascinating, fantastic Getting Killed .

My Home Is Not In This World [White Vinyl] (LP)

Natalie Bergman

Natalie Bergman's latest is an exquisite blend of '60s girl group sounds, psychedelia, Nancy Sinatra-esque vintage western pop, and classic soul. The melodies are evocative, lush, and swingin' — the stuff of your candy-sweet, retro-lovin' dreams. The lyrics are smart, moving, and unforgettable, whether Bergman's singing about a charmer with a wandering eye and a disarming smile ("Gunslinger") or feeling like a movie star while sitting next to a paramour in his car ("Dance"). Dreamy and delightful, My Home Is Not In This World is an album to be savored.

Deadbeat (CD)

Tame Impala

Tame Impala's Deadbeat is some of singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Kevin Parker's best work. It's also a bit of an evolution in sound from Tame Impala's last album, with its low-key electronica/chillwave vibes. Parker calls it "club-psych," which is an apt description for the woozy psych-folk-meets-dancefloor beats of the album. These ravey, electronic elements bring a blissed out, energizing feel to the work, even as Parker's lyrics and vocal melodies bring a yearning and poignancy to the proceedings. Deadbeat takes Tame Impala in exciting, innovative new directions.

Ego Death At A Bachelorette Party (CD)

Hayley Williams

How is an album this good? Hayley Williams' new surprise collection, Ego Death At A Bachelorette Party , covers a ton of emotional ground over the course of these ridiculously fun and compelling songs. The title track is funny, catchy, and relatable in its ability to grandstand and joke through the pain. "Glum" has a sort of dream-pop edge as Williams sings of loneliness and a sense of loss. There are many gems to discover here: it's no surprise the Paramore singer has assembled such a loyal following over the years, because these tracks are fantastic.

Faith In The Unknown (CD)

ShunGu

ShunGu's Faith in the Unknown is a dream. The album is eclectic, channeling old school vibes across soul ballads and lo-fi hip-hop, creating that gorgeous, immersive, endless summer feel. The swoon worthy, jazz-inflected R&B chill out jam "Did You Hear The News" (feat. Ruqqiyah) is so beautiful it's ridiculous. The production on the title track is lush, languid, and heady while Maxo's flow keeps the proceedings anchored and earthy. But really, all the songs are incredible. This is an album with surprise after surprise. You'll want to get lost in these smart, lovely, richly layered tracks.

Liquorice (CD)

Hatchie

Australian indie pop artist Hatchie's Liquorice is a swirling, shimmering dream of an album. Shoegaze and dreampop sounds are the perfect vessel for Hatchie's lyrical themes of longing, love, and regret. Melodies soar with dizzying euphoria, they capture the inner turbulence of uncertainty and desire. Hatchie recorded the album in Los Angeles with Melina Duterte (aka Jay Som) and it's a lovely, hopelessly romantic, gut punch of a record.

All Things Must Pass [50th Anniversary Edition] (LP)

George Harrison

All Things Must Pass was George Harrison's first release following the break-up with The Beatles. In celebration of its 50th anniversary, All Things Must Pass is commemorated with a stunning new mix of the classic album by Grammy Award-winning mixer/engineer Paul Hicks and overseen by executive producer Dhani Harrison.

Father Mother Sister Brother [OST] [Amoeba Exclusive Pink In Clear Vinyl] (LP)

Jim Jarmusch

Filmmaker Jim Jarmusch teamed up with British and German singer-songwriter Anika to create the moody and magnetizing soundtrack to his latest, Father Mother Sister Brother . The duo met at the Sacred Bones label's 15th anniversary celebration in 2022; the result of that first encounter is this collaborative, experimental collection. Anika covered two tracks: Jackson Browne's "These Days" (à la Nico) and Dusty Springfield's "Spooky." The rest of the pieces are hushed, hazy instrumental works that are haunting, evocative, and lovely. It's a fantastic record.

Surfing On Sine Waves [Expanded Edition] (CD)

Polygon Window

Surfing on Sine Waves , the only release by Polygon Window, aka Richard D. James, aka Aphex Twin, is getting an Expanded Edition. Originally released in 1993, this electronic classic of mindbending techno was the second release in the groundbreaking Warp Records Artificial Intelligence series. The new Expanded Edition 3LP vinyl also features 3 extra tracks from the early days of Aphex Twin.

Flowers (CD)

Durand Jones & The Indications

Durand Jones & The Indications want to take you on a lovers' holiday. Vibrant, seductive, and sparkling, that's the vibe of their latest, Flowers , as well as the name of one of the album's standout tracks. These songs feel like a breath of fresh air, the fullest expression of the lush, groovy throwback R&B sound the band has become known for. "Lovers' Holiday" feels like a punched-up version of Quiet Storm, "Flower Moon" is a chilled out romantic track with '70s swagger, "Been So Long" is twinkling, classic soul with a chorus that feels like a classic. Flowers is a blissful, dreamy, uplifting lesson.
