Atreyu

Atreyu's tenth studio album finds the band emphasizing the emotional, dramatic elements of their famously heavy sound. "All For You" moves from crunchy metalcore verses to a surprisingly melodic and affecting chorus. "Dead" also revels in the strong contrasts between its gritty verses and anthemic, soaring refrain. "Children of Light ft. Max Cavalera" feels like an opus, moving from a dark, propulsive intro and brooding verse into a suddenly spacey, ethereal pre-chorus. The real chorus is a gut punch that carries the rest of the song out on powerful guitar riffs and lush solos.

Location Lost (CD)

Failure

Failure's Location Lost is bruising, moving, and fantastic. Each song is its own kind of slow burn. Melancholic indie rock crescendos into sludgy shoegaze-metal on "The Rising Skyline," a haunting duet with longtime friend of the band Hayley Williams. Urgent alt-rock guitars and insistent vocals open "The Air's on Fire" before it bursts into a hypnotic, driving heavy track. Compelling and cathartic, Location Lost is essential listening.

Imagine this: it's 2 am, it's 1984, and you're overlooking the city from your penthouse loft in a gleaming modern condominium. On the turntable, the hottest new city pop record imported from Japan, and on deck, a little Latin American soft rock, a little '70s jazz fusion. That's the vibe of Los Retros' lush, mood-setting debut, Odisea . The songs are soulful and jazzy in a way you rarely hear these ways. Japanese vocalists Hikari and HITOMITOI contribute to the vibe. Out on Stones Throw, Odisea is a soft-hued, sophisticated '80s fantasy.

Devastating in the way it captures the feeling of love and loss, gorgeous in its bluegrass melodies, Lost Cause Lover Fool is exceptional.

The generation that followed-which saw her become one of the great competitors in the sport, and endure manipulation from Martin that included marriage, exploitation, and violence-is chronicled in this biopic offering a compelling central effort from Sweeney.

Machine Girl

Machine Girl is one of the most boundary-pushing, exciting acts in contemporary music. Their latest, Psycho Warrior (MG Ultra X) , is filled with righteous anger and riot energy. The band fuses punk rock, electronic, industrial, metal, and noise into a searing sound that recalls Atari Teenage Riot while delivering their own version of controlled chaos. Machine Girl translates all the inner despair, fury, and defiance so many have been feeling into a record that's perfect for the present moment.

Insomnia & Seven Steps To Grace (CD)

Smithsonian Folkways presents a very special album from poet and musician Joy Harjo, Insomnia and Seven Steps to Grace . Produced by Esperanza Spalding, who also plays bass, the album is filled with wonder, beauty, and indelible images. Harjo weaves her poetry through atmospheric arrangements with elements of jazz, prog rock, grunge, and Native American traditional music. Insomnia and Seven Steps to Grace is purposefully imbued with the power of love and beauty, a much-needed counterpoint to the ills of our age.

LA punks Death Lens return with an urgent, gritty new album. What's Left Now was produced and mixed by Zach Tuch (Knocked Loose, Touche Amore) and features recent tourmates Militarie Gun on "Waiting to Know." These partnerships feel like matches made in heavy-hitter punk rock heaven. With driving percussion, infectious guitar riffs, and lyrics that capture the intensity of that "walking on a tightrope" feeling inherent in modern life, this is one of the year's most essential records.

Romanticize The Dive (CD)

Metric

Metric has a rare gift for making perfect synthpop gems. Romanticize The Dive is full of addictive tracks that are always danceable...and sometimes emotionally devastating. "Time Is a Bomb" is an anthem for bad decisions, with its relentless insistence that this is exactly what the narrator wants  -- flirting with disaster is great, actually. "Crush Forever" is euphoric and ravey, an ode to all the women who don't hold back, the "cool girls" who earn the moniker by being true to themselves. Metric has done it again with this album of easy-to-love, impossible-to-ignore dancefloor bops.
