The Sky, The Earth & All Between (CD)

Architects

Architects return with a blistering, disturbingly beautiful album. On The Sky, The Earth and All Between , the band's fierce, pummeling sound is punctuated by anguished, sweeping choruses and quieter moments of introspection. Architects skillfully juxtapose the album's most intense, growling, threatening heights with addictive, anthemic melodies that give the record its emotional center. A punishing, powerful collection of tracks that will keep fans returning.

Hallucinating Love (LP)

Maribou State

Maribou State return with Hallucinating Love , an album celebrating kindness, companionship, and care — just when it seems like the world is in short supply. The album was written after a particularly challenging period for Chris Davids and Liam Ivory, both on a personal and a global level. Their solution? Write an album “about being in a dark place, a place of struggle, and then looking forward to bright futures,” as Davids put it. That's the vibe of this gentle, gorgeous electronic album. With guest appearances from Holly Walker, Andreya Triana, North Downs, and Gaidaa, Hallucinating Love feels as warm and welcoming as the ecstatic and enveloping love it describes.

There's A Whole World Out There (CD)

Arm's Length

The Canadian emo band’s second album delivers a strong sense of dynamics, earnest vocals, and powerful hooks. It’s an expert blend of Midwest emo and post-hardcore with stirring, soaring tracks like “Funny Face” and “Fatal Flaw.”

Horror (CD)

Bartees Strange

Bartees Strange's Horror is the sound of resilience, joy, and hope breaking through the darkness. Inspired by growing up young, Black, and queer in rural America, his family's use of horror stories to impart life lessons, and Strange's youthful practice of watching scary movies to grow stronger and braver, the album is richly layered, nuanced, and ultra original. With influences ranging from Fleetwood Mac to Funkadelic, the music is a seamless and satisfying blend of indie rock, psych, country, and hip-hop. Horror is a wildly original record that'll make you believe in both the power of music and the human spirit.

Departures & Arrivals: Adventures of Captain Curt (CD)

Curtis Harding

Atlanta-based soul artist Curtis Harding draws on cosmic influences for his fourth studio album. A concept album about a pilot lost in space, Departures & Arrivals: Adventures of Captain Curt is a soulful space opera with strong grooves and pleasing melodies. "There She Goes" lures you in with a lush string intro followed by a funky bassline. "Hard As Stone" is moody and intriguing with its distorted vocal and handclaps, while "True Love Can't Be Blind" is an epic classic soul number with stirring percussion and a catchy chorus. Elsewhere, "The Winter Soldier" offers fuzzed-out guitar and a toe-tapping beat. This is an eclectic set of compelling songs.

Adrian Younge Presents Something About April III (LP)

Adrian Younge

Adrian Younge's latest is the sound of eternal summer. Adrian Younge Presents Something About April III is a treasure trove of dark psychedelia, effortless cool, and Brazilian tropicalia. The record was inspired from classic '60s and '70s Brazilian acts, with the performers on April III hand-selected by the Brazilian composer (and Grammy winner) Céu. A 30-piece orchestra and a collection of analog synthesizers add to the groovy, downbeat, ultra-hip atmosphere. An exceptional record by one of the most talented and intriguing artists in the game today, you won't be able to get April III out of your head.

The Rise And Fall Of A Midwest Princess [Deluxe Edition] (LP)

Chappell Roan

Chappell Roan’s Grammy-nominated debut album chronicles her move from Missouri to Los Angeles and focuses on love and self-discovery. Big pop hooks and strong vocals abound here, often tinged with melancholy. The energy rides high on the ultra-catchy but sweet-natured “Pink Pony Club” and the cathartic, breakup track, “My Kink is Karma.” Elsewhere “Super Graphic Ultra Modern Girl” is edgy and funky with tongue-in-cheek lyrics.

Who Wants To Talk About Love (CD)

Jade Bird

Jade Bird's Who Wants to Talk About Love is a heartbreaker. The rising UK artist has a honeyed voice imbued with a longing so sharp it'll go straight to the heart: at times, she calls to mind the devastatingly lovely vocals of Alison Krauss. The melodies draw from country, folk, and pop to create a timeless, spellbinding sound, while lyrically Jade Bird tackles loss, doubt, acceptance, and hope on her road through the beginning and end of love. The excellent Who Wants to Talk About Love is a moving, complex, insightful journey.

Black Hole Superette (CD)

Aesop Rock

Blending cosmic beats and complex songwriting, Aesop Rock goes full mad scientist on the excellent Black Hole Superette . A sense of the surreal flows throughout the album, with the lyrics bringing a larger-than-life, fable-like quality to the everyday interactions that build throughout our lives 'til they reach a boiling point. It's a smart, woozy, truly satisfying listen. Tune into the intergalactic sounds, relish the idiosyncratic lyrical images, and get lost in this riveting record. Featuring appearances from Lupe Fiasco, Armand Hammer, Hanni El Khatib, Homeboy Sandman, and Open Mike Eagle.

Burnover (CD)

Greg Freeman

Greg Freeman’s sophomore album is explosive, unsettling, and an undeniable emotional catharsis spanning the ages. Freeman thrives on finding the resonance in the eccentric ugliness of the past. His songs have a palpable sense of place (in this case, the Northeast), mining history for character-driven tales of violence, loss, and epiphany. Burnover cements his status as a singular songwriting talent.

Everyone's Talking! (CD)

All Time Low

All Time Low is back with Everyone's Talking! The songs are a pleasing fusion of alt-rock and pop-punk, driven by emotion and carried along by ear worm choruses. The perplexed and almost wistful "The Weather" chronicles the disappointment of a run-in with someone who was previously close but now can only make time-wasting small talk. "Oh no!" is a sunny, sing-a-long-ready celebration of getting better after a long time struggling...only to worry they'll no longer be interesting to friends and fans. With bops this catchy and relatable, even in its saddest moments,  Everyone's Talking! is a lot of fun.

Forever Howlong [Eco Jazz Transparent Blue Vinyl] (LP)

Black Country, New Road

Black Country, New Road's Forever Howlong is a dynamic, imaginative record that doesn't sound like anything else out there today. In the course of one song, opener "Besties," the band combines baroque pop, jazz, indie pop, and folk into a head-spinning, infectious ode to best friends (at least one of whom perhaps wish they were more). The track sets the tone for the rest of the album's operatic, exciting, bigger-than-life sound, a fusion of blissful melodies and off-kilter, unexpected lyrics. Produced by James Ford (Fontaines D.C.,Depeche Mode, Blur), it's the first release from the group to feature Tyler Hyde, Georgia Ellery, and May Kershaw splitting vocal duties.
