WILLOW

WILLOW's empathogen is a heartfelt and bold sonic step forward. Moving away from her earlier pop and pop-punk sounds, WILLOW now leans into a jazz vibe that's alternatively theatrical and spectacular, alternative and authentic. She's joined by Jon Batiste and St. Vincent on these lush, splendidly arranged tracks. Lead single "b i g f e e l i n g s" is a fantastic indicator of the temperature, virtuosity, and emotional pitch of empathogen : every element of this show-stopping album is just straight up bigger and more brilliant than everyday life.

I Got Heaven (CD)

Mannequin Pussy

Mannequin Pussy returns with I Got Heaven , a musical showcase of moods, with all of them hitting equally hard in different ways, often within the same song. Singer and guitarist Marisa Dabice bares her soul on the indie-folk track "I Don't Know You," increasing the volume, distortion, and emotion as the song goes on. Conversely, "Ok? Ok! Ok? Ok!" is a chaotic hardcore banger, replete with a tambourine during the breakdown. Brooding and shoegazey one moment, and bludgeoning you over the head in the next, I Got Heaven happily throws the rulebook out the window and does things the Mannequin Pussy way.

Baku's Revenge (CD)

Magnolia Park

Florida's Magnolia Park return with their sophomore album, Baku's Revenge . Vocalist Joshua Roberts comes out swinging, issuing a verbal declaration to any naysayers, before blasting off with Feel Something, featuring Derek Sanders of Mayday Parade. Baku's Revenge rocks all the way through, with pop songs with nu-metal roots hip-hop beats and an emo punk attitude.

Jessica Pratt

Jessica Pratt is back with the intriguing, almost otherworldly Here in the Pitch . The songs sound like they've been piped in from some reality adjacent to our own: an alternative existence with all its multifold possibilities, a door leading to a place where the past yet lives. Part of that's due to the gauzy textures, the intimate lyrics, and the melange of genres from a bygone era. Pratt's compositions blend '60s pop, bossa nova, psychedelia and the slightly off-kilter, cinematic stylings of icons like Scott Walker and Judy Garland. It all works splendidly. A transportive, utterly beautiful album that's unlike anything else out there.

Rationale (LP)

Glitterer

Branching out from his roots in Title Fight, Ned Russin has elevated Glitterer from a one-man side project to a fully formed band on Rationale . Russin and company pluck moments of shiny synth from the '80s, fuse them together with '90s fist-pumping alternative rock and 00's shoegaze and pop and you're getting a sense of what to expect from Rationale .

Blue Raspberry (CD)

Katy Kirby

The soft, sweet indie of Katy Kirby's Blue Raspberry feels as lovely and easy-going as a summer's day. But these tales of love, growth, and questioning are no syrupy fun fair concoction: there's a lot of depth to these low-key charmers. The melodies are playful, the lyrics thoughtful. ("Party of the Century" ponders the ethics of having children in this world.) It's a celebration of queer love, an evaluation of how romance and challenge work — or don't work — together, and a masterful release from an ultra-talented singer-songwriter.

Cyan Blue (LP)

Charlotte Day Wilson

Charlotte Day Wilson's Cyan Blue is a hazy, dreamy just left-of-center R&B album. The songs are intimate and inviting, the sound of falling in love. Wilson's Sade-like silked vocals float in and around the standup bass and plaintive piano at the heart of the tracks; the effect is hypnotizing and enthralling. Influences ranging from jazz to neo-soul are woven together to create an ethereal, seductive atmosphere. Charlotte Day Wilson is a true R&B innovator and Cyan Blue is a must-hear.

Foreverland (CD)

Keyon Harrold

Much like the pink clouds gracing the cover, Keyon Harrold's Foreverland takes you on a tranquil, dreamy, atmospheric journey. The renowned trumpeter's third solo album sets forth a diverse musical palate, pulling from genres such as Afrobeat, hip hop, R&B, and post-bop. Themes of sorrow and heartache take shape within the tracklist, but Harrold also invites listeners to look-forward as seen on standout track "Beautiful Day" featuring PJ Morton. Rich and multi-layered, this project is a gorgeous auditory experience.

Undefeated (CD)

Frank Turner

Frank Turner's Undefeated is easy to love, a punk album that deftly blends genres and will leave you with a smile on your face. "Girl from the Record Shop" feels like a slice of punk-meets-new-wave heaven: it's funny, relatable, and feels like it came directly from one of those '80s 7-inches that gets rediscovered and passed around in awe. "Letters" is insistent, heartbreaking power pop with a crescendoing pop-punk chorus (emphasis on the "punk"). "Do One" is defiant yet ultra catchy thanks to its anthemic pop-punk chorus (emphasis on the sunshiney old school "pop"). It's true...Turner's songwriting is, just like this album's title, undefeated.

Death Lens

Death Lens delivers scorching modern punk on Cold World . The songs tackle the topics of social injustice and global turmoil, and how we react to the seemingly nonstop flow of bad behavior and bad news. Listening to Cold World is an exhilarating experience that speeds by and will leave you aching for more. Grounded and gritty, the album moves from fierce and uncompromising to alienated and abrasive. This is the real deal.

RAT WARS (CD)

Health

Health's RAT WARS is some of their most intense, heaviest songwriting yet. The band artfully blends metal, hardcore, electronic, industrial, post-punk, and noise into tumultuous, tortured tracks that do, often, ultimately find redemption. The full-on sonic assault of RAT WARS feels justifiably angry and heartbroken, sometimes weary and broken — the album is like a mirror held to the exhausting, seemingly endless slog of bad news and bad times. But in those dark moments, Health always finds the tiniest sliver of light, which imbues these songs with an emotional resonance and power that makes them simply unforgettable. A bold, brave album that's ready to soundtrack your roughest times and remind you that hope is always just on the other side of the night.

I Don't Know How But They Found Me

IDKHow's second album (but first album as a solo act) is a window into the mind of lead vocalist and bassist Dallon Weekes, formerly of Panic! At The Disco. Fittingly for a solo act, the sound is an introspective departure from the debut album, Razzmatazz , with themes revolving around mental health and non-normative thinking styles. The sonic influences range from '70s glam to '90s R&B and pretty much everything in-between, showing Weekes as a songwriter with an appreciation of dark lyrics and upbeat melodies.
