New "What's In My Bag?" Episode With Moby!

Posted by Amoebite, October 2, 2013 06:36pm | Post a Comment

From humble punk beginnings to global festival headliner, Moby is easily one of the most recognizable faces in electronic music. In addition to being a platinum selling artist/producer, Moby is also a seasoned photographer and a multi-instrumentalist. He's an advocate for animal rights and a devout vegan. The guy is one cool dude.

Moby is back with his eleventh studio album, Innocents (Mute). Following a move from New York to LosMoby Angeles, he recorded most of the instrumentation himself. He also collaborated with a list of relatively known singers including Mark Lanegan, Wayne Coyne of The Flaming Lips, Cold Specks, Skylar Grey, and Damien Jurado. The result is a multi-layered production of both deep emotion and huge sonics.

The album will be promoted by a three date tour in Los Angeles. Yes, just 3 live shows will make up all the touring for Innocents. Oct 2, 3 and 4 will see Moby perfoming three hour sets at the Henry Fonda Theatre in Los Angeles. Each show will be performed in two parts with the first half featuring songs from the new album and the second half being a "greatest hits" set.

Here's a picture of Jake Gyllenhaal spitting out sea water and a dead unicorn.
You're welcome.

The day after Thanksgiving I was returning my home to its normal layout. (We’d transformed our living room into a banquet hall; it looked good, but I still don’t know how I’m going to repair the dent in the floor left by the wind octet.) In the process of carrying the pool with live swans upstairs to the sewing room (you have to make due when living in the city) I heard a sound come from my lower back that sounded like an excerpt from a composition by Harry Partch

Yes, Christmas came early and Santa brought me sciatica. (Even though I specifically asked for a pony. With sciatica.)

What is sciatica? It is a set of symptoms including pain that may be caused by general compression or irritation of one of five spinal nerve roots that give rise to each sciatic nerve, or by compression or irritation of the left or right or both sciatic nerves, the source of which typically stems from tiny devils prodding the inside of your bowels after the neighborhood witch has cursed you.

The '80s List: Part 10

Posted by Amoebite, September 2, 2011 12:46pm | Post a Comment
Wipers One day at Amoeba Hollywood I proclaimed that Aztec Camera's 1983 release High Land, Hard Rain was one of the best records of the '80s. This single statement eventually led to over 200 Amoebites ranking their top 10 favorite albums from the ‘80s.

From the beginning we realized that it was impossible for most of us to condense our favorites from all genres into a tiny top ten list. So, we limited our lists to Rock/Pop and its sub-genres like punk, metal, goth, and new wave. Even so, it was a difficult selection process because not only are there hundreds of amazing records to consider, there is also the added dynamic of time.

The '80s were a long time ago and the music has had many years to gestate. We have a deep sense of nostalgia and sentiment with these albums as our fondest memories are associated with them. These are albums we LOVE.

- Henry Polk

P.S. We'll be posting new additions to the '80s list project from Amoeba staff members on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. See all entries in our ‘80s list series.

P.P.S. The '80s List Book is available for sale at Amoeba Hollywood.
