The 45's Section at Amoeba Music Hollywood: Tour with Tuna

Posted by Billyjam, March 13, 2014 11:32am | Post a Comment

Below is the recent interview conducted with Tuna who works in the amazing 45's / 7" singles section at Amoeba Music Hollywood where you will find all genres of music on 45's in both new and used. There's a lot of original pressings of 7" singles dating back several decades as well as many brand new releases.

As Tuna noted, a lot of contemporary punk acts like to release their music first on cassette (another popular old format thought to be long gone), followed by a 45 single release, and then followed up with an LP.

When you visit Amoeba's 45's section be sure to look up on the wall for the cool displays of 45's, many or which are very rare releases. Now in its eight year, Record Store Day (coming up on April 19th), is when to expect to find a slew of new additions to the 45's section.

In addition to the 45's sections at each of the three Amoeba Music stores (Hollywood, Berkeley, and San Francisco), you will also find a wide variety of 45's on the Amoeba online store. New additions for this week alone include Swedish rockers The Hives' 2004 single "Walk Idiot Walk / Genepool Convulsions" new for just $4.98, which (like all the 45's from Amoeba.com) SHIPS FREE in U.S. Nice!

Next Thursday, March 20, at 10 a.m., Amoeba Hollywood will host a press conference to announce the list of titles for Record Store Day, which takes place April 19.

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti will be on hand to open the event with a Record Store Day Proclamation. Following will be the announcement of titles and highlights, and a roundtable discussion with rap legend Chuck D, The Doors drummer John Densmore, local record store owners and more special guests.

Chuck D was inducted into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame last year for his work leading the pioneering hip-hop group Public Enemy, helping to make politically and socially conscious lyrics popular in hip-hop. Densmore, also a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member, was the drummer for the classic L.A. band The Doors, and he appeared with Doors bandmates Robby Krieger and Ray Manzarek in the 2012 documentary RE:GENERATION, which saw Densmore collaborate with electronic music star Skrillex.

A simultaneous RSD event will take place in London March 20, while another event will also take place that day in Nashville. The list of titles that will come out on Record Store Day will also be released the same day on www.recordstoreday.com.

Congratulations to all of the winners! And thanks to everyone who entered. We received more than 10,000 entries, making it one of our top three contests ever.

Our turntables come courtesy of Needle Doctor, in partnership with Filter magazine.

Didn't make it to Record Store Day? We still have RSD releases for sale in-store and online.

Record Store Day 2013 at Amoeba SF

Posted by The Bay Area Crew, April 22, 2013 07:42pm | Post a Comment

Saturday, April 20th marked the sixth annual Record Store Day (RSD), the holiest of holy days in the record store day san francisco 2013 amoebarecord store biz. Of course, Amoeba was the hub of action in San Francisco as we are the Mecca of many a music fiend. Additionally, because the Universe works in mysterious ways, April 20th (4/20) also happens to mark the celebration of a particular herb important to many San Franciscans. Like peanut butter and jelly, the two holidays meshed together on Haight Street, creating a mystical sandwich of epic proportions.

The first Record Store Day fans on the scene lined up at 4:30am outside the doors of Amoeba San Francisco, which is pretty admirable considering the store was not scheduled to open to the public until 10:30am! Early risers were rewarded with scoring the limited edition RSD release they came for and were the firsts to get our special limited run commemorative t-shirt, which was being silk screened right on the stage by our friends at Free Gold Watch. The proceeds from the t-shirt sales will go to the SF Rock Project, which is a performance-based music school for kids age 8-18!

If you missed out on the fun, watch this video below and check out these great pictures taken by our in-house photographer! It's just like being there.

Also check out our selection of limited edition Record Store Day items for sale on Amoeba.com HERE and drop by or call Amoeba to see what RSD gems are remaining.
