The Bug "Kill Them / Louder" (2013)

California is the destination of two of the four stops on the current extremely limited North American tour - tagged as Built By Meanred - by The Bug (aka prolific Dubstep and other electronic genres producer Kevin Martin) alongside Daddy Freddy and Miss Red who were up in Montreal performing last night and are playing San Francisco tonight (Thursday March 21st) and Los Angeles tomorrow (Friday March 22nd) before flying cross country to play NYC on Saturday night (March 23rd). The venues are Public Works, San Francisco, Club Los Globos in Los Angeles where Ras-G will join the lineup, and Le Poisson Rouge in New York where Jubilee and Fantasy Thrilla will also perform.

The last minute announced select US dates by the extremely prolific artist, whose discography spans such labels as  Ninja Tune, Virgin, Rephlex, Position Chrome/Mille Plateaux, Word Sound, Hyperdub, City Slang, Tigerbeat 6, and Grand Royal, will likely sell out so don't wait to buy tickets at the door. Buy them in advance for SF here, LA here, and NYC here.  The short tour is a kind of teaser for the forthcoming new EP and new full length from The Bug. The EP, which will be a double 10" release entitled Filthy, will drop on Ninja Tune on May 28 ("Kill Them / Louder" is from that release) while the follow up album - also on Ninja Tune, to be titled  Angels and Devils, will drop later in the year and feature an impressive and diverse guest list including Death Grips, Daddy Freddy, Grouper, Ganja Sufi, Burro Banton, Inga Copeland, and Danny Brown.

Interview with Frosty - Director of Crate Digging/Recycling Documentary Secondhand Sureshots (now on DVD)

The short, engaging documentary Secondhand Sureshots, which every DJ / record collector must see, proves that there is indeed gold to be found in the dollar bins, and that a crate digger with a good eye and a good ear can simultaneously recycle and create from those cheap vinyl finds. Filmed four years ago as a production of dublab, this crate digging in the dollar bin documentary was very recently released on DVD by the Stones Throw label with bonus material. The film, which screened over the weekend at the Downtown Independent, was directed by Frosty, who aptly and eloquently described it as "an experiment in creative sound recycling." The film takes place in Los Angeles, where it follows J-Rocc, Daedelus, Nobody, and Ras G on a crate digging excursion (a "secret mission" is the film's official description) at the local thrift store's (Out Of The Closet Thrift Store) dollar bins to see what musical magic they can conjure up out of what most people would immediately discard as crappy records (and some are really crappy).

As any modern crate digging beat maker will tell you, it is not about what the original record you have in your hands has to offer, but what you can cull from it to transform it (via chopping up and reworking sounds) into something new and wonderful, and this is where the skills of these four gifted producers come into play. The film comes as a DVD + CD set containing the original 30 minute documentary with additional films featuring more music and art creation plus extra beats and mixes from all four producers, and some other niceness. Recently I caught up with Secondhand Sureshots' director Frosty to ask him about his love letter to dusty old vinyl.

New Electro/Techno 12"s Coming This Weekend:

Antislash
VERTIGES EP 12"
FRANKIE047

"LENDEMAIN DE FETE" is a shaky tool, with deep atmoshperes and a nice flip mid-track to get lost in. Bleepy and trippy stuff. Sick arrangements on the b-side with killer snares and sounds that are weird and twisted. Not your run of the mill techno-tech house here.

SOMEBODY GONNA GET PREGNANT WHITE LABEL 12" PR01

White label 12" on the hipster club tip. Includes “SHOOT THE LAZER,” a raunchy club tune that jacks the opening to a certain animated movie classic, and “DAYLIGHT,” a bootie remix of the MATT AND KIM song by the same name. Rounding out the 12” is “STIR,” a minimal dancefloor tune with stuttering, drunken style vocal takes.
